@Joe, I’m glad to hear that it works! FYI, Ubuntu rolls out updates slowly starting with 10% of users, increasing 10% every 6 hours if there are no problems. This may explain why it took some time before you saw the update. Everyone should have been able to apply the updates on Sunday. Details are here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Phasing As for other distro’s I think it is time someone else takes over. At this point is should be more of an administrative process since the problem has been pinpointed and patches were made for one distro. You will probably have to file a bug report, point back to this bug and follow their procedures. Worst case the patches may have to be updated slightly to account for different line numbers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1876286 Title: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation." @seb128 just checking to make sure that your not waiting for something on my end. If I understand it correctly it looks like Focal is done since you re-ran the systemd test and now all tests have passed, and I verified that the fix worked. Should the tag be updated to verification-done-focal? I’m guessing that the Xenial and Bionic fixes are waiting on the glib-networking testing certificate updates we talked about a few days ago. I'm able to confirm the focal-proposed updates/3.6.13-2ubuntu1.2 worked for pop connections to pop.verizon.net on port 995. I started with a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 and applied all updates except proposed. In order to make GnuTLS 3.6 use an older version of TLS I created the file /etc/gnutls/config with the following contents: [overrides] default-priority-string = NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3 As expected gnutls-cli and evolution returned the error. After installing the proposed versions of libgnutls30 and gnutls-bin I was able to connect to the server with both programs. I also used gnutls-cli to connect to imap.aol.com port 993 as a second check to make sure the new code supports zero length tickets. I also tried port 443 on www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, www.microsoft.com, and www.cnn.com as regression tests. All tests connected to the server and started simple client mode. No errors were displayed. @seb128 can you double check my thinking? It looks like the regressions on Bionic with glib-networking/2.56.0-1 are related to newer versions of GnuTLS reporting GNUTLS_CERT_INSECURE_ALGORITHM on the test certificates. Michael Catanzaro posted a patch on 2018-04-11 on comment 3 at: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=794286#c3 This fixed test 3/8 certificate after applying the patch, generating the certs (tls/tests/files/create-files.sh) and building the package. Test 4/8 file-database failed with the same error. It looks like tls/tests/files/ca-verisign-sha1.pem was signed with sha1 and also needs to be updated. [Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."
Sebastien, I believe that something on the Yahoo/AOL/etc server side was changed to return a zero length session ticket for older TLS protocols. According to https://gnutls.org/manual/html_node/Session-tickets.html: "A disadvantage of session tickets is that they eliminate the effects of forward secrecy when a server uses the same key for long time. That is, the secrecy of all sessions on a server using tickets depends on the ticket key being kept secret. For that reason server keys should be rotated and discarded regularly. [snip] Under TLS 1.3 session tickets are mandatory for session resumption, and they do not share the forward secrecy concerns as with TLS 1.2 or earlier." My guess is that they felt this was insecure and return a zero length session ticket as a workaround. If more servers are configured that way this will become a bigger problem including more programs than just Evolution and Claws email clients. RFC5077 states "If the server determines that it does not want to include a ticket after it has included the SessionTicket extension in the ServerHello, then it sends a zero-length ticket in the NewSessionTicket handshake message." A zero length ticket is a legitimate value and should be supported. Testing with the current version of OpenSSL on Ubuntu 18.04.4 (1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.5) showed that it is able to handle zero length session tickets and wireshark confirmed that the server returned a zero length ticket with the following command: $ openssl s_client -msg -tls1_2 -connect pop.verizon.net:995 This is the first time I have gone through this process. Please let me know if I missed something or did something wrong. I'm trying to follow the SRU wiki entry: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates If I'm reading this correctly this bug falls under the last bullet of section "2.1 High-impact bugs" which states "Updates that need to be applied to Ubuntu packages to adjust to changes in the environment, server protocols, web services, and similar, i. e. where the current version just ceases to work." I believe the following two conditions have been met: 3.1 Check that the bug is fixed in the current development release, and that its bug task is "Fix Released" 3.2 Ensure that the bug report for this issue is public I'm working on 3.3 and modified the description with the first cut at an impact statement. [Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."
The issue appears to be in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux- gnu/libgnutls.so.30.14.10 with the function _gnutls_recv_new_session_ticket around line 758 of session_ticket.c. The code reads two bytes and assigns the result to the variable ticket_len. Unfortunately this value is zero. A few lines later when the variable is used in a memory allocation call, the call fails and the code returns GNUTLS_E_MEMORY_ERROR. I'm not sure what is causing the value to be zero. Joe, If your not sure if there is any sensitive information in the trace please do not send the files. I was able to get wireshark to decrypt and decode the pcap and was certain that no username/password was recorded in the files I posted. Joe, Thanks for the info! I made some progress on this today. Evidently Evolution uses GnuTLS to communicate with the pop server. [Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."
I haven't been able to get the pop3 debug logging to work. Maybe one of the developers could try to add another account with a pop connection to verizon from a fully patched 18.04 machine? The verizon.net settings are: Server: pop.verizon.net Port: 995 Encryption method: TLS on a dedicated port Authentication: password The Evolution wiki has instructions on debugging the mail backends. I tried to follow the instructions for pop3 but the logfile created had a length of 0. I tried to cut and paste from the wiki into a terminal to make sure there aren't any typos but had the same result. I noticed later on that page there is an all option. That worked but the entries were mostly imapx or DB. I couldn't find any pop logs or anything with TLS. Here is the link to the directions: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Debugging Wireshark shows a TLS connection made to pop.verizon.net (66.218.85.35). I can see the server cert chain. Towards the end of the connection there is a small amount of data returned by the server to which the client responds with a reset. [Bug 1875326] [NEW] Can't double click items in icon view
Public bug reported: Ubuntu: 20.04LTS Nautilus: 1:3.36.1.1-1ubuntu2 Double clicking an item in Nautilus should open the item but this doesn't happen in all cases because the display is scrolled. When items are displayed in icon view (as opposed to list view) and there are more items than can be displayed in the window, clicking an item can cause the display to scroll so that the item is no longer under the cursor and so double-clicking is impossible. [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share
I just realised this bug with gvfs, as randolf just pointed out, could very well be directly related to the problem I have been experiencing since 12.10 with LibreOffice hanging randomly sometimes opening and somtimes saving files opened from a samba share mounted with Nautilus sometimes causing data loss. Sometimes I have had to reboot to recover from a hung Libreoffice session when saving to a samba share and retype entries into my spreadsheed on local disk and then copy it up to the samba share. As a work around for now I am using Smb4K to get my Windows shares mapped so I shall test my theory out. If this is right, and from the sounds of it this bug affects several packages related to music and office (not just nautilus), you are quite right Romano to get this risen to critical status. Bodum, I can confirm the problem doesn't exist in kubuntu 13.04 using dolphin as the file manager. [Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive
This problem has not gone away with Linux Mint 14 (Ubuntu 12.10) on my pc with the nvidia chipset. In fact, it is now worse because Safely Remove Drive has been removed. See launchpad #1067876. So to safely remove my portable hard drive I now need the following 4 commands: > udisks --unmount /dev/sdb1 > udisks --detach /dev/sdb wait for remount > udisks --unmount /dev/sdb1 > udisks --detach /dev/sdb Replace sdb with whatever your drive is using. I have the same problem with Rhythmbox, it crashes when I try to sync podcasts using 12.04. [Bug 726918] [NEW] Screen lockup when screen is locked and laptop lid is closed for an extend period of time
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver I currently have my laptop set up to automatically lock my screen whenever I close my laptop lid, but I suppose this could still occur if the screen is manually locked and the lid is subsequently closed. Whenever I leave my laptop in the aforementioned state for a period of time (the two times this has happened have been at least an hour), I come back to my laptop, open the lid and find my screen appearing to be unlocked. I look a the clock and notice that it is frozen at around the time I left (or maybe sometime after, my memory's a little fuzzy). I have no choice but to kill the X server using the handy Ctrl+Alt+Backspace shortcut. I tried to do a bit of troubleshooting. I set my power settings to cut off the display after 1 minute. I locked my screen, closed my lid, and waited for a few minutes. I opened it up to find what I expected, the unlock screen. So either it is not leaving the lid down for more than the Power Manager settings, or it takes longer for that combo to wreck havoc. Also note that my screen saver was not changed, i.e. is set to "Blank Screen." I apologize for the long winded bug report. When this occurs again, I will follow the directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze and post the acquired information here. Yes, that's pretty much it. I'm now using Lucid Lynx 10.04 and the inconsistent design is still present here. [Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup using Matrox gfx
Accepting that my bug duplicates this one, then it's not specific to the video driver (mine is an Nvidia GEForce MX 4000). Removing compiz as Davide suggests fixed it for me also. I'd suspect a race condition involving compiz and gnome-panel, and perhaps all these other variables are just things that affect the timing. -- Panel utilities not shown on startup using Matrox gfx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572550 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 589785] [NEW] Gnome panels do not display
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Ubuntu 10.04 updated as of 2010-06-04. Problem: The Gnome top and bottom panels do not display after bootup. This system is set up for running the MythTV front-end, and so display is on the TV Out port of an Nvidia GEForce4 MX 4000. The display is a standard (not HD) TV with 640x480 specified in xorg.conf. The problem also happens with this resolution set to 800x600 or 1024x768. I have also seen the problem with these resolutions on a standard monitor, and it seemed to disappear at 1280x1024 and higher. This system is also configured for automatic login. I can work around this by opening a terminal window (Crtl-Alt-T) and typing either "killall gnome-session" or "gnome-session --replace &". Another method is to create a startup task that spawns another process which in turn sleeps for 20 seconds and then runs one of the above commands. So this seems to be some sort of race condition. [Bug 502020] Re: The notes system seems inconsistent
It seems pointless forwarding this report upstream as I have done some research now and found this problem goes back at least as far as 2005. Obviously it has very low priority and not enough people want it fixed. I doubt anybody is seriously using the file/directory notes system as it stands now. IMHO I think it might be useful for attaching notes to directories but it is useless (or at least very cumbersome) to bother attaching notes to individual files using this system. -- The notes system seems inconsistent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 502020] [NEW] The notes system seems inconsistent
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Hi, The file notes system isn't working for me. If I create a note for a file via the properties sheet the note won't appear in the side pane at all (in notes view mode). If I create a note for a file in the side pane it ends up being attached to the parent folder instead!? In any case it still will not appear in the side pane (I can only see it if I call up the file's property sheet). I'm baffled how this note system is supposed to work but it's pretty useless like this. The notes system shows promise, however I wish Nautilus would support the descript.ion note system as used in Total Commander in Windows with a note popup when you mouse over the filename or display the note as another column in the list view mode. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal I am new here. I kept trying to install various items and was told I couldn't because one or more issues in the preference sections needed my attention. I finally tried to open one of the managers and the upper and lower gnome bars dissapeared and Firefox filled the whole screen. When I went back to the desktop, all of the items I had place in the upper bar had been deleted. When going through the Ubuntu menu, all items were still there but once I opened firefox, I couldn't access the the menu bar and the status bar at the bottom was also gone. I do not see a minimize button on Firefox so I don't know what to do, short of uninstalling and reinstalling the program and starting from scratch. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid that I downloaded and installed from Wubi. My first experience with your product.
