[Bug 1587224] [NEW] Update from 14.04 to 15.10 crash

2016-05-30 Thread runner
Public bug reported:

May 30 2016

Update from 14.04 to 15.10 crash.

This report is not from the computer with 14.04 that is dead.
This report is from teh same hardware but it now has new install Ubuntu 15.10.
Consequently all the logs are gone. Sorry.
This also explains why I can not duplicate this bug unless I try to install
14.04 and then update it to 15.10.
Let see what other people say.

Have on DELL laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. (Correction had 14.04 now it is dead.)
Told Ubuntu software-updater to show all updates.
It shows 15.10.
Told it to update.
It went trough all the step up and including "downloading".
After it got to step installing, and was not moving I checked upgrade logs.
Upgrade logs showed that for one hour nothing was hapening.
I had no choice but to kill the upgrade knowing that my system will die.
Of course it was already dead.
(This part I am little hazy about. I think the updater complained about
"fontconfig".)

My system was:
14.04 with gnome fallback/flashback.
DELL Laptop, Intel Graphics, nothing fancy.
It worked fine before that for 2-3 years.

Expected:
I expected the upgrade path as described on Ubuntu.com and as advocated by
software-updater to work.

Got:
Dead system.

Tried:
After it crashed/hung, I stopped teh upgrade. I downloaded 15.10 and made USB.
Tried to update by telling to use that USB 15.10. That did not help either.

Conclusion:
I think this is a bug and the migration path 14.04 to 15.10
using software-updater
does not work May 30 2016.
Thank you.

[Bug 1168467] Re: phy0 - rt2800pci_mcu_status: Error AND [drm:gen6_sanitize_pm] *ERROR*

2013-06-24 Thread runner
This bug should be critical
I am having random crashes. Looking in the syslogs attached below.
I had 2 black screen crashes and 1 frozen screen crash.

Which of the many error messages are leading to the crash.
The (a) occurred 6 times.
The (b) notification occurred 1000s times.
I am not sure if (a) and (b) are related bc they both talking about power.

What I am certain is that lately ubuntu 12.04 crashes 2-4 times per day and I
do not see
that this is being worked on. I see other ppl seeing this bug.
I would like to call this bug critical.

[Bug 1194329] [NEW] inspiron crashes unexpectadly few times per day in 12.04

2013-06-24 Thread runner
Public bug reported:

2013/06/24

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu
lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release:12.04
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
I do not know what package is causing crash but syslogs is saying that drm
(direct rendering manager) is generating errors.
3) What you expected to happen
I do not not expect any crashes.
4) What happened instead
computer crashes unexpectadly few times per day.
(5)
I sent the ubuntu-bug -w.
It was saying that this is new install of ubuntu. That is not correc. The
ubuntu is here about 7 months.
(6)
I see no files in /var/crash/

This person (see link) has very similar crashes so I would call it confirmation
of a problem.
I believe that drm (direct rendering manager) is sick.

This link is a person showing same problems as I do implicating drm.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/300147/how-can-i-troubleshoot-why-ubuntu-keeps-crashing-on-my-laptop/312343#312343

My story.
I have DELL Inspiron 14z. Run Ubuntu 12.04. Gnome classic.
I have installed VMWare and other things.
Today I have uninstalled VMware tools, but I still see the errors, although so
far in 6 hours the computer did not crash. That can change at any time.

Have been running 12.04 on this hw from the time I got the computer for about 7
months.
It was well behaved for most time.
Few weeks ago (May 2013?) it started to crash once a week and then started to
crash more.
Some bad days crashes 3 times in one day.
I suspected heat problem and replaced fan+sink and also updated BIOS
but the computer still crashed after those changes.
Ubuntu is updating itself every night.

My story is similar to Peter on the link above.
My computer worked fine, then few weeks ago started to crash
with either complete shutdown on frozen desktop.

At one time this was the last message in the log file before it
crashed completely.
I have two types of errors like Peter and both caused by drm (direct rendering
manager).
As you can see from the gap in time this was the last error before system died.
pre
Jun 23 18:50:54 mycomputer bluetoothd[904]: Endpoint unregistered: sender=:1.32
path=/MediaEndpoint/A2DPSink
Jun 23 18:51:42 mycomputer kernel: [ 111.363166] [drm:gen6_sanitize_pm]
*ERROR* Power management discrepancy: GEN6_RP_INTERRUPT_LIMITS expected
1707, was 1700
//see time gap before reboot
Jun 23 18:55:31 mycomputer kernel: [ 340.123935] CPU2: Package power limit
notification (total events = 229)
/pre

But note that on that day I saw this error 6 times but the system
crashed only 3 times.

I also like Peter have another error:
pre
Jun 23 19:21:55 mycomputer kernel: [ 36.323966] [drm] Driver supports precise
vblank timestamp query.
Jun 23 19:21:55 mycomputer kernel: [ 36.324114]
[drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed
/pre

Both of these errors are caused by drm (direct rendering manager).

The sanitize_pm seems to be more correlated with crashes.
It occurred 6 times in one day. There were 3 crashes, 2 were dead computer,
1 was dead desktop). One of the 6 errors was the last log message before
computer died.

Thank you for listening.
If you need more info pls ask.

I should learn how to spell. The title should say
inspiron crashes unexpectedly few times per day in 12.04.
If somebody can tell me how to change it I would.

[Bug 1168467] Re: phy0 - rt2800pci_mcu_status: Error AND [drm:gen6_sanitize_pm] *ERROR*

2013-06-24 Thread runner
chenzero: question for you.

I am seeing this error also and my computer crashes. My computer eaither
completely crashes or sometimes the desktop freezes.
This error may occur 6 times, but the computer crashed only 3 times. Once this
error was the last thing the computer wrote into syslog before it crashed. But
interestingly the error does not always lead to crash. For example today I see
I have the error 14 times but it did not crash yet.

I would be interested in knowing if the PPA upgrade stopped your
crashes (chenzero) after having it for about 10 weeks.

Here is my hardware which is nearly identical to chenzero.

[Bug 933115] Re: evince doesn't open PDFs when using right-click Open nor Open with...

2012-03-05 Thread Dash Runner
I am no longer working in this installation of Ubuntu that had the bug.
It was reported as a factual bug in that I could find no reason why
PDFs, connected by extension to open in Evince, were not being opened
unless I started Evince and opened them with File:Open.I tried
disassociating re-associating PDF extensions to Evince without any
success for point-and-click opening in the Ubuntu 11.04 derivative it
appeared in, which had by default hidden the Evince menu link. Let's
hope derivatives of Ubuntu 12.04 are free of this bug.

[Bug 806790] [NEW] when responding to email, the original text is very long line, no line wrap

2011-07-06 Thread runner
Public bug reported:

Using evolution email.

This does not happen for every email so I am thinking it may be this
sender is using some email program that evolution does not like.

When I receive email, it is formatted on multiple lines.
If I want to respond to that email, the original text is included in my email.
But the original text instead staying formatted expands into a single long line.

That means it would be difficult for receivers to read it if some of them are
not the original writer that could be a problem. Plus I look like an
incompetent bcs my emails are on a single line. It is to be noted that my own
text is nicely line wrapped to some reasonable text. It is
only the original text that looses any formatting.

--thanks for listening.
ubuntu release 11.04
evolution 2.32.2
expect:
I would expect that the original enclosed text in the response would stay as
formatted as it was when it arrived.
What happened:
The included original text was just a single long line.
Evolution Preferences:
Setting to no HTML, use text only. Setting, for response, enclose original
email in the body.

[Bug 162544] Re: Custom calendar alarm causes computer to beep rather than to play the specified sound; evolution-alarm-notify treats sound URI as simple filename

2010-08-16 Thread runner
A suggestion for solution and request for higher priority.

This bug is for some people a high priority. That is to say, some people
need to be on time some places and it is the sound alarm that tells them
to go because they are not watching the screen and the popup is too fast
to be useful. It actually should stay up until user dismiss it just like
alarm clock snooze.

This bug is around at least 2 years. In 9.04 I was able to get around
play sound reminder by using run program which I made play sound
file. That worked in 9.04 but not in 9.10.

I am not claiming being expert on Evolution (in fact I am not expert), but here
is my suggestion. Since the popup notifier does work for most people, here is
how to fix make sound alarm. Copy the code of popup notification. In the
middle replace the section doing popup with system call to play/aplay sound
file.
You can also apply it to run program.
-regards

2008-05-09 Thread runner
My mistake, there is a way to see all processes. Pls kill this bug.
Go to view, select all processes.

[Bug 228858] [NEW] System monitor does not show all processes

2008-05-09 Thread runner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

My system:
Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon - released in October 2007.
Using Gnome.

The system monitor (SM) apparently does not show all processes.
I had very high cpu utilization (100%) shown on the graph.
Also the temperature shows high (80 degrees on this machine but your mileage
may vary).

But looking at processes in SM, there is no process that show high utilization.
I start top (another performance tool).
It shows in my case that NetworkManager is using around 90% of CPU.
I kill NetworkManager, the SM CPU load graph goes down to 5-10%.

My conclusion:
SM is not showing all processes. But to confuse people it shows total cpu load
on the cpu graph. So people go crazy -- I am in treatment now.
I happy.
-cheers

Okay, maybe it is a bug.
It should say clearly on the cpu performance graph that the graph shows ALL
processes but the list may not show the cpu hog because not all processes are
shown.
It drives people crazy.
IMHO
