[Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* (* = any key)

2013-03-18 Thread thinkpad
Regarding WORKAROUND 1:

maybe I'm doing sth wrong, but I've disabled many settings in CCSM,
Launcher's launched via a non-super shortcut; still, I can't get super
to work in a custom keyboard shortcut.

What could I be doing wrong?

[Bug 1136644] Re: gedit search function is not practical anymore

2013-03-04 Thread thinkpad
related to this https://live.gnome.org/Gedit/FAQ ?

gedit is very slow and/or crashes when opening files with very long
lines. Can you fix it?

When designing GtkTextView (the text display widget of gtk+ which gedit
uses) the developers had to make a design decision: trading off bad
performance and memory use on corner cases like very long lines in
exchange for better performance in search operations and full support
for UTF-8 text. This is a known limitation of GtkTextView and cannot be
fixed. On top of that Pango seems to use a lot of CPU drawing such long
lines. This may be fixable, but it isn't easy... Feel free to give it a
try. Crashes with long lines are usually due to out-of-memory
conditions, but if that's not the case then we would like to know about
it.

I think I've suffered from the long-line issue a lot, and have used
leafpad (and am about to try geany) as a more reliable alternative;
don't get me wrong: if gedit were reliably stable and would not become
UNUSABLE for certain documents, I'd have zero complaints about it...

[Bug 574296] Re: Gnome theme not applied on session start

2011-06-02 Thread thinkpad
@ ThomasNovin: thanks for reading my post and noticing it too.

By now I can say:
Reproducible: YES.

Since I mainly do standby (especially when on the go) and can boot on AC
Power (when eventually / occasionally I decide to (re-)boot)), this
problem doesn't really affect me much.

Only when I forget to boot and find myself needing to boot on battery
I'm in a bit of a trouble.

But I guess I can refer back to above posts about killing and restarting
gnome-settings-daemon to help me out then...

[Bug 500417] Re: nautilus doesn't honor gnome theme

2011-05-05 Thread thinkpad
duplicate of 574296 ?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/574296

~.~.~

I noticed that this (probably) only happens when I start my IBM Thinkpad
X41 (with SSD) on _BATTERY_ power.

If I start with AC adapter plugged in, however, everything seems to be
fine...

Reproducible: likely so (will keep observing, but won't restart system
several times now).

Thanks.

[Bug 433856] Re: "Display Properties" sets virtual resolution too low

2010-01-04 Thread thinkpad
Thanks cement_head.

As I am an "absolute beginner" I would greatly appreciate a few more
guiding words:

on
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only
which links should I open? or should I use the "synaptic package manager" (or
other) instead to navigate to those drivers?

Similarly, how do I find the FGLRX drivers you mention (which links to
open, which buttons to press) ?

Finally, how easily can this get "messy" and irreversible ? - Do I just
need to remember which drivers I installed and can then simply uninstall
them if I don't see the desired effect ?

Many (beginners') thanks !

;-)

[Bug 433856] Re: "Display Properties" sets virtual resolution too low

2009-12-31 Thread thinkpad
Update:

Shut down the computer, cold re-boot: same orange streaky lines on
panels.

Turned off visual effects completely (system > preferences >
appearance): no more orange streak.

So I'm somewhat happy (though I would like to (have kept) keep some
visual effects... :-/ )

[Bug 433856] Re: "Display Properties" sets virtual resolution too low

2009-12-31 Thread thinkpad
Sorry for multiple posting (no way of editing ?):

New observation:

Now that I told "Display Preferences" that my external monitor is to the
right side of my laptop it has worked (though physically it still is to
its left). BUT - the display is still a bit whacky and fickle, that is
to say, the panels (both top and below Firefox, whatever their proper
name), are mostly stripy orange with the occasional icon / button
visible when I hover over it.

So basically this "works", but obviously far from perfectly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Sorry for not realizing immediately:

The "error" text

originates from various files on my desktop. Guess this only indicates
further a whacky display configuration...

Like for "vukasin0", dito for me.

IBM Thinkpad R50, with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500.

Plus: when logging back in I get the following error text across the
panel:

[quote]
java (error) console microsoft print 2 how to hide panel
[unquote]

What has this to do with a) Java and b) Microsoft ?

For the moment: does it make sense to fiddle around with xorg.conf &
xrandr (in Karmic) ?
