[Bug 1792544] Re: demotion of pcre3 (8.x) a.k.a pcre (without the 3) in favor of pcre2 (10.x)

2023-01-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Regarding NGINX, PCRE2 support is now available in NGINX nginx 1.21.5+
so there was support as of December 24th 2021 and later.

Which means that NGINX 1.22+ supports PCRE2. This could be marked as
Triaged *for 23.04 and later* once NGINX is merged in from Debian
upstream, if someone can put a few cycles to build/test.

[Bug 1900063] Re: Sync flatpak 1.8.2-3 (universe) from Debian sid (main)

2020-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello.

According to the tool to indicate whether a package is seeded or not,
Flatpak is currently seeded in Ubuntu Budgie and Xubuntu:

$ seeded-in-ubuntu flatpak
flatpak (from flatpak) is seeded in:
  ubuntu-budgie: supported
  xubuntu: supported
gir1.2-flatpak-1.0 (from flatpak) is seeded in:
  ubuntu-budgie: supported
  xubuntu: supported
libflatpak-dev (from flatpak) is seeded in:
  ubuntu-budgie: supported
  xubuntu: supported
libflatpak0 (from flatpak) is seeded in:
  ubuntu-budgie: supported
  xubuntu: supported

Ubuntu is now in Final Freeze - per the Final Freeze announcement [1],
packages need to fit one of these two categories:

1) Release critical bugs that affect ISOs, installers, or otherwise
   can't be fixed easily post-release.

2) Bug fixes that would be suitable for post-release SRUs, which we may
choose to accept, reject, or shunt to -updates for 0-day SRUs on a
case-by-case basis. This second case should have SRU-style bugs filed
with the appropriate template, referenced in changelog.

I don't see a justification included on the sync request that would put this
request into either of the categories as this does not have any SRU template.

The only new changes I can see here are that it has a dependency on
DBus, but that you fix an issue with Parental Control checks. That's
likely SRUable post-release.

However, I don't see justification to sync this at this time given we
are in Final Freeze.

[Bug 1887252] [NEW] lightdm config-error-dialog.sh should pass --no-markup

2020-07-11 Thread Mikel Ward
Public bug reported:

I modified my ~/.profile to call "logger". This resulted in in producing
some output on stderr like

```
<13>Jul 11 13:02:46 /usr/sbin/lightdm-session[1408]: profile sourced ...
This showed an empty zenity prompt.
Logs suggest zenity was failing because it was treating `<13>` as pango
markup.
```
from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 3 char 6: “13” is not a

We should not assume the error message strings contain valid markup,

[Bug 1849573] [NEW] No way to specify tls-version-min or tls-version-max, please include the config options in the GUI config panel.

2019-10-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Public bug reported:

The OpenVPN plugin for Network Manager does not have any mechanisms to
interpret tls-version-{min,max} directives for OpenVPN.

In Debian upstream, especially in Buster and Unstable, they disable TLS
1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 by default and use only TLS 1.3 by default.
Therefore, with OpenVPN servers that only use TLS 1.2 or older, it is
impossible to establish a tunnel to those locations *unless* you specify
tls-version-{min,max} in the configurations.

This can be done in OVPN files for OpenVPN directly, but there is
currently no mechanism to do this in the GUI.

This is tracked in Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=933177 as the original cause for TLS 1.3 support,
but if Ubuntu ever defaults OpenSSL to not have TLS 1.0-1.2 support
enabled by default, we will be out of luck.

Upstream, GNOME has not yet merged a merge request which would add this
option to the GUI: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/NetworkManager-
openvpn/merge_requests/15

Testing in Debian, the patch works against NetworkManager OpenVPN there.
I am currently testing these in Focal, Eoan, and Bionic to see if this
is something we can possibly include at a future date to fix this issue
long-term.

In the interim, this tracks the request to get these features in.

There are no immediate plans.

When we last checked, there were no problems with PCRE, but PCRE2
wasn't available in most distributions we support, making the
switch mostly meaningless.

Also, it looks like PCRE2 is still not supported even by Exim,
which is the parent project of PCRE and PCRE2:

https://bugs.exim.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1878

As such, adding PCRE2 support to nginx looks premature.

[Bug 1769991] [NEW] [16.04] Unable to import OpenVPN configuration into Network Manager

2018-05-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Public bug reported:

In 16.04, it is currently not possible to import OpenVPN configurations.
Specifically, imports fail with the error of:

The file 'filename.ovpn' could not be read or does not contain
recognized VPN connection information.

Error: Key file contains line 'client' which is not a key-value pair,
group, or comment.

--

An example configuration that fails to import is as follows (with some
critical components excluded, like a proper remote address, or a proper
x509 name); this is a config that otherwise works with a Sophos XG
Firewall-based SSL VPN system

client
dev tun
persist-tun
persist-key
proto tcp
verify-x509-name ""
route remote_host 255.255.255.255 net_gateway
resolv-retry infinite
remote 1.2.3.4 8443 tcp
ca ca.crt
cert client.crt
key client.key
auth-user-pass
cipher AES-256-CBC
auth SHA512
comp-lzo no
route-delay 4
verb 3
reneg-sec 0

--

This same exact configuration works with a direct call of `openvpn
./filename.ovpn`.

Why Network Manager is unable to parse or import the OpenVPN
configuration is beyond my ability to comprehend.

Note that the same configuration made by hand in the new VPN window
works fine, but the import function fails. (Which is a pretty severe
bug)

[Bug 1704580] [NEW] mouse-button-modifier should default to Super

2017-07-15 Thread Mikel Ward
Public bug reported:

Trying to figure out why Alt+click wasn't working in Visual Studio Code,
I discovered that mouse-button-modifier was set to Alt.

This was supposedly changed to Super upstream per
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607797. Could we please use
Super as the Ubuntu default too?

Hmm, it's in a special section for Settings. Which requires pressing
Down then Right then Enter. It should just be Enter, because it's the
most relevant action.

[Bug 1679216] [NEW] local-fs fails to mount cdrom, forcing emergency mode boot

2017-04-03 Thread Mikel Ward
Public bug reported:

When I tried to boot my Ubuntu machine this morning, it dropped into
emergency mode.

It did the same after rebooting.

Logs showed

=

Removing these two final entries from /etc/fstab and rebooting solved
it.

/dev/dvd /dvd iso9660 ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro 0 0

Seems the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1455683, but that
was marked WONTFIX two years ago. Also not clear why it just started
happening.

[Bug 1662510] [NEW] Sound problem Ubuntu 16.04 Dell Latitude E5540

2017-02-07 Thread Ward Van Driessche
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my laptop from 14.04 to 16.04 a couple of weeks ago. From the
start I noticed that when my computer starts it makes this crackling
sound, like a white noise, only for a second just before the starting
tune is played. Also, when I suspend my computer the sound is always set
to no volume, even though it's set to non-zero in the OS. I need to turn
the volume down completely and when I turn the volume up again
everything works fine. It seems like the calibration isn't working. But
I need to do this every time I start up/unsuspend.

Applications with phone calls give me this crackling noise for a couple
of minutes too, then it disappears.

I've already tried to follow every step here:
SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Output from

bash alsa-info.sh --stdout

Gives me (some of the output):

[Bug 1569970] Re: Nautilus does not start

2016-04-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Correction, I have 'NoDisplay=true' in the default, not 'display=true'.
However, the default install "just works", so I'm not able to do any
confirmation on the issue. (Marking Incomplete though as it needs more
information or people to test to confirm)

[Bug 1569970] Re: Nautilus does not start

2016-04-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Using stock Nautilus after a dist-upgrade from the latest Daily, I am
unable to replicate this. The same error output indicated by the
original post of the bug shows, but Nautilus pops up without issue.

The only difference between what is filed in this bug and the 'default'
I have is that in the .desktop file at `/etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus-
autostart.desktop`, I have `display=true` where the OP has
`display=false`.

Try editing `/etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus-autostart.desktop` to have
`display=true` just to test the 'default' setup, and see if it works
then?

[Bug 1473542] [NEW] ubuntu-server daily iso - Upon installation, /etc/network/interfaces not populated with correct network interface names, so networking fails to start

2015-07-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Public bug reported:

Hello.

I've installed today from the Ubuntu Server Daily ISO. During the
installer process, we get the system identifying network interfaces with
the traditional unpredictable naming algorithms of eth##. After
installation, the system uses systemd to identify network interface
names, per
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/PredictableNetworkInterfaceNames/

In the Virtual Environment i'm using, on VMware Workstation x64 with two
virtual NICs, I end up with ens33 and ens34 according to the installed
system.

However, the installer populated the /etc/network/interfaces
configuration with eth0 and eth1. As a result, networking fails to
start up after a reboot, and either /etc/network/interfaces needs edited
to match the correct identifiers and a reboot issued, or one has to do
`sudo dhclient` to update the IP address. For static addressing
networks, of course, you still need to revise the interfaces file.

This is a serious issue, as upon installation via the ubuntu-server ISO,
networking will fail to come up, leaving users to scratch their head
expecting instant access.

Due to an uncertainty in the severity, I've set it to High given that
last point. Please feel free to change it. Note that this is filed
against both systemd and netcfg as I am not sure which one needs to be
fixed.

** Description changed:

[Bug 1385639] Re: OpenJava

2014-10-29 Thread Thomas Ward
This doesn't appear to be a bug against the GTK package at all, but
rather an issue with OpenJava. As well, it does not appear to be valid
against OpenJava either. This is based on the following error lines:

Caused by: net.sourceforge.jnlp.LaunchException: Fatal: Application Error:
Cannot grant permissions to unsigned jars. Application requested security
permissions, but jars are not signed.
...
net.sourceforge.jnlp.LaunchException: Fatal: Application Error: Cannot grant
permissions to unsigned jars. Application requested security permissions, but
jars are not signed.

This seems to suggest that this issue is related to the fact the Java
application is unsigned, and the security settings for OpenJava appear to be
such that the software is requesting security permissions but is unsigned.
Therefore, I don't think this is a bug, but rather an issue of the security
settings you have set for Java runtime in OpenJava.

[Bug 1385639] Re: OpenJava fails to initialize java application

2014-10-29 Thread Thomas Ward
I've marked this as Invalid against GTK because it's not really a GTK
issue based on the error logs.

Having said this, there are two Open Java versions in precise, and no
details on which, so I have marked this as affecting the Open Java
packages that are actually in precise.

I do not know whether this is a bug or not, per my prior comment (see
comment number 2), and this needs further research and review before
deciding whether it is also Invalid against Open Java.

[Bug 1297773] [NEW] WebDAV moves files using PUT and DELETE instead of MOVE

2014-03-26 Thread Matt Ward
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04
(I'm told this also happens on 12.04)

WebDAV moves files using PUT and DELETE instead of MOVE

How to reproduce the issue:

Pre-requisites:
  - WebDAV server.
  - Packet sniffer (e.g. Wireshark) or set appropriate log levels in the WebDAV
server to observe HTTP requests being made.

Mount a webdav server:
1. open a nautilus window
2. use menu files connect to server
3. enter the server address (e.g. dav://localhost:8080/alfresco/webdav) and
connect

Create two folders: test-move1 and test-move2.

Create a text file in test-move1 named move.txt with some short text in
it.

Select the file in nautilus and type Ctrl-X.

Navigate to test-move2.

Move the file by typing Ctrl-V.

Observed behaviour:
A multi-request move operation is executed.

GET on test-move1/move.txt
HEAD on test-move2/move.txt
PUT on test-move2/move.txt
...
DELETE on test-move1/move.txt

Expected behaviour:
The move is performed using the WebDAV MOVE command.

By using GET, PUT, DELETE instead of a single MOVE:
- The client must wait for the entire file to be downloaded before it can be
uploaded to the new location. By using MOVE the entire operation may be highly
optimized and performed only on the server.
- Any associated metadata (including versioning) for the file is lost - since
we are in fact creating a new file and deleting the old one.
- There is a lack of atomicity and potentially, data integrity. What would
happen if an update is made to test-move1/move.txt just before the DELETE
happens?

[Bug 1030357] Re: crash with SIGSEGV in cairo, when evince tries to print this PDF file

2012-08-26 Thread Thomas Ward
This is marked as Triaged, so its waiting for dev fixing.

Felix, is this already fixed in Quantal? If it is, then if you can find
the patch and attach it to here, we might be able to SRU it. If it is
*not* yet in Quantal, it needs fixed there first, then it can be SRU'd
to Precise. Note that for QUantal, it should be fixed in Debian as
well, if the fix is not yet there (according to the Debian bug, it is
not yet fixed there)

[Bug 1019341] [NEW] Seahorse GUI does not display additional-identity email information on PGP keys

2012-06-29 Thread Thomas Ward
Public bug reported:

There seems to be a difference from 11.04 (which I last used). In
12.04, the PGP key system can have its keys handled via Seahorse. in
11.04, you could expand a key if it has multiple sub-identities and
email addresses on the key, or you could view the email addresses and
comments on that sub-identity, as well as see the primary key
information.

This is not the case in 12.04. While you can expand the key, you cannot
see what email addresses or comments are tied to those sub ids. This
makes adding additional emails/etc. to the keys, and determining which
one is the primary key. When you have two IDs on the same key, its not
a problem, but when you have three or four, it becomes troublesome.

--
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

(1) In 12.04, open seahorse.

(2) Go to Personal Keys

(3) Either create or import a complete key (including private keys),
where that key has multiple names and signatures on it.

(DO BOTH 4A AND 4B!)
(4a) Open the key's properties, go to the names and signatures tab. There
will be listed first names, but no email information or comments.

(4b) In the Personal Keys tab, you will see an arrow next to a multi-
name key. Click that to expand. You will see the other names on the
key, but no email information about those other names.

[Bug 1019341] Re: Seahorse GUI does not display additional-identity email information on PGP keys

2012-06-29 Thread Thomas Ward
Is there a workaround, then, for me to add and modify the PGP key? I
have to have five additional email addresses and name identifiers tied
to the key, and without seeing this in Seahorse, it causes problems.

[Bug 994189] Re: killall incorrect tab completion

2012-05-06 Thread Thomas Ward
I tested this with Bash and gnome-terminal in 12.04.

This bug exists in Precise, however it exists in all terminal emulators,
tty terminals, and is not specific to gnome-terminal, which suggests
this is a bug with bash-completion or the source pacakge for killall,
psmisc.

Therefore, I am adding that this affects bash-completion, and setting
this for gnome-terminal as Opinion, as this can occur in any and all
terminal emulators, including remote SSH sessions.

I am also adding this to affecting killall's source package, psmisc,
because of the issue that james-plate is having (which I can confirm)
that when you do `killall plugin-container` it cannot find the process,
but can find the process with `killall plugin-containe`.

Confirmed against 'psmisc' because the bug is reproducible in other
shells (tested: bash, zsh) under the same circumstances.

Reconsideration may be needed by other bug squad members for bash-
completion bugs, as this bug is reproducible under zsh for `killall`,
but tab-completion is not handled for killall in zsh.

[Bug 878277] Re: Keyboard Layout Options | Alt/Win behavior incomprehensible

Totally agree.

And it uses mapped the wrong way.

When it says Hyper is mapped to Win, what it really means is When I

I think adding a help button is not sufficient. The wording needs to be
clearer.

But the descriptions may come from xkb rather than Gnome Control Center.

[Bug 903651] [NEW] When opening files from network share, applications try to cache entire file locally

2011-12-13 Thread Jason Ward
Public bug reported:

Say you have a 80gb tar file.

Say this tar file is on a SAMBA share on the network.

Trying to open the tar using file-roller is something you will deeply
regret.

1) file-roller VERY SLOWLY attempts to cache the entire file locally (I mean it
takes it ages)
2) file-roller does not check that the local drive can store the file its
copying

File-roller has no good reason to copy locally, and the practice is
entirely counter productive, and in the case of multi-GB files can lead
to

a) access to the samba share for other applications (say a media player) being
overwhelmed and causing them to error
b) makes file-roller appear hung
c) leaves massive files in your local cache (~/.cache/.fr-randomcharacters)
and no way to clear them except manually
d) can cause your machine to run out of diskspace
e) is very very slow, copying the file locally, manually is many times faster
and doesn't cause other applications to error (see a)
f) very bad user experience

[Bug 440831] Re: RAID creation fails due to absent package mdadm

2011-10-20 Thread Jason Ward
I have this problem after doing an install from the alternative CD 11.10
so it'snot just isolated to the live CD.

mdadm may well have been removed for speed reasons, but then Disk
Utility needs to fail gracefully and not as it does show that mdadm
completed successfully.

Please don't be fooled that everyone that might come across this can fix
it, I have never done raid on Linux before and I am still learning, and
struggling after 2 days (i.e. 2 days after first attempting to create an
RAID array its still not functional). Issues like mdadm and Disk
Utility not working nicely together, do indeed make me wish for the days
when I used to do this in Windows with a huge amount of comparative
ease.

[Bug 719678] [NEW] File conflict when uploading files to FTP with flat directory structure

2011-02-15 Thread Craig J. Ward
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When trying to upload a file to an FTP in Nautilus I receive an error
stating that a folder with the same name already exists.

I am connecting to an Adtec Edje media drive with a flat directory
structure. When I connect to FTP servers with folders I do not have this
issue, nor do I have any issues when I ftp the files via command-line to
this drive. I get this message every time I attempt to move a file on to
the FTP through nautilus whether there is a file that exists with this
name on the drive. It perplexes me because it recognizes the files that
I am trying to move as an MPEG, but it says the original file is a
folder.

We are running Ubuntu 10.10

[Bug 272749] Re: Set window manager URGENT hint on bell.

2010-09-16 Thread Mikel Ward
I've created a PPA at https://launchpad.net/~mikelward/+archive
/flashing-gnome-terminal if anyone wants to try the patch on Maverick.

You can do this by running:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mikelward/flashing-gnome-terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-terminal gnome-terminal-data

My aim is to get this integrated into Gnome, so if you find any
problems, let me know, otherwise a comment in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=557593 asking to get this
merged upstream could be helpful.

Note that the PPA replaces the existing gnome-terminal package. I don't
know if this is the right way or not. It might cause problems when the
next official build comes out. Help/advice appreciated.

[Bug 272749] Re: Set window manager URGENT hint on bell.

2010-09-16 Thread Mikel Ward
The patch adds these options under the General tab:
[ ] Bold the tab title when the terminal rings the bell
[ ] ...even if I am working in that tab
[ ] Flash the window's entry in the window list when the terminal rings the
bell
[ ] ...even if I am working in that window

which ones you turn on will depend on how you want to use it.

USE CASE 1 - Notify when command in background window is done

Description:
Enabling the Bold the tab title and Flash the window's entry, but not the
...even options provides a useful way of letting you know when a long-running
command is finished. You can start a long-running command, go away and do
something else, and then when the command is done, the terminal icon in the
taskbar will flash. That way you don't have to keep Alt-Tabbing back to your
terminal to check if the command is done.

Settings:
[*] Bold the tab title when the terminal rings the bell
[ ] ...even if I am working in that tab
[*] Flash the window's entry in the window list when the terminal rings the
bell
[ ] ...even if I am working in that window

and put
   PS1=\\007$PS1
at the end of your ~/.bashrc.

Demo:
   http://mikelward.com/software/gnome/terminal-bell-demo2.ogv

USE CASE 2 - Better visual bell

Description:
Enabling all four options will give you a persistent bell that you must
acknowledge, so you don't miss an important event if you were away from your
computer. e.g. if somebody sends you a message using wall or the system
writes a critical log message on the console, the terminal icon in the taskbar
will flash until you Alt-Tab back to the window (or, if you're already in that
window, you can stop it flashing by typing something).

Settings:
[*] Bold the tab title when the terminal rings the bell
[*] ...even if I am working in that tab
[*] Flash the window's entry in the window list when the terminal rings the
bell
[*] ...even if I am working in that window

and if you added
   PS1=\\007$PS1
to your ~/.bashrc, for use case 1, you should remove it for use case 2.

2010-05-01 Thread John Ward
I'm tempted to email this bug report to the NTFS-3G developer and
possibly see some action on it. It's obviously not a major bug but it's
been like this about 2 years now (probably longer) and when it comes to
dealing with it inside a Windows OS it's a serious problem. The files
are essentially dead. No deletion, renaming, copying or moving is
possible.

[Bug 445084] Re: click-to-focus window is too sensitive

2010-04-06 Thread Jeff Ward
This behaviour must be inherent in some other GUI library, because it's
not apparent in the gnome-terminal code.

I use the highlight copy/paste buffer so extensively that this is a very
serious usability issue for me. I finally got fed up and installed
konsole. While it did install some 191MB of KDE libraries, I'm quite
happy with the end result. konsole has a very similar feature-set
(tabs, etc) and tons of configuration options like gnome-terminal.

For anybody else that wants to use konsole as a workaround for this bug:

sudo apt-get install konsole

I also put a launcher icon in my to panel pointing to /usr/bin/konsole.

[Bug 445084] Re: click-to-focus window is too sensitive

2010-04-02 Thread Jeff Ward
Further notes:

- It's not just while focusing into the window, but that's when the
behaviour is most annoying.

 - The problem is worst in the end of line space to the right of text
in the terminal. In that area, any mouse movement (seemingly even a
sub-pixel movement) will cause a selection and effectively erase the
copy buffer.

- The problem is still somewhat annoying even in the non-end-of-line text area
depending on where in the character your cursor lands (to the left or right or
near the center):
  - If you cursor is on the right half of a character, any horizontal movement
will cause a selection. In emacs, by comparison, you have to drag to the end
of the character before it's selected.
  - If you cursor is on the left half of a character, it nicely allows you to
drag half a character in either direction. This would be desirable in the
above case as well, IMO.
  - Vertical movement is ok because you can move a whole line height without
causing a selection.

If I get ambitious, maybe I'll look at the source code myself.

I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10. In my previous installation
I was so annoyed that I installed konsole (yes, under gnome), but that
comes with a lot of unwanted KDE packages.

2010-02-28 Thread John Ward
I can still confirm this bug.

I have installed Karmic 9.10 64-bit, updated fully (Rhythmbox is 0.12.5)
and it still creates ? in a song name. Another test was just to create
files on the NTFS partition with ? question marks and : colon's in
the name using Nautilus and nano on the terminal. I can do this without
problem, even though a Window's system would not be able to manipulate
them in an any way.

[Bug 318625] Re: Rhythmbox shouldn't set illegal / special characters on filenames (i.e. ?; question mark) when ripping to NTFS volumes

2010-02-28 Thread John Ward
Obviously this is only a big deal if you're dual booting with another
Windows system, but at the same time you wouldn't necessarily create an
NTFS filesystem on a Linux only box (you would more than likely do a
/home of ext3 or 4, or just a large ext3 or 4 partition). So the fact is
that this problem will occur mainly with people who are also sharing
there NTFS partition with a Windows system.

[Bug 318625] Re: Rhythmbox shouldn't set illegal / special characters on filenames (i.e. ?; question mark) when ripping to NTFS volumes

2010-02-28 Thread John Ward
I'm not confident enough to propose elaborate solutions to these
problems, especially at the technical end of things. I do agree that
Rhythmbox isn't the problem here, although one of the simplest solutions
would be to make it simple to enable special character stripping. The
problem is in the NTFS-3G driver, I think. It shouldn't impose full
POSIX compatibility on a filesystem that is associated with an OS that
isn't POSIX compliant. The developer suggests it's needed for full
flexibility and interoperability:

From: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#posixfilenames2
NTFS supports several filename namespaces at the same time: DOS, Win32 and
POSIX. While the NTFS-3G driver handles all of them, it always creates new
files in the POSIX namespace for maximum portability and interoperability
reasons. This means that filenames are case sensitive and all characters are
allowed except ‘/’ and ”. This is perfectly legal on Windows, though some
application may get confused. If you find so then please report it to the
developer of the relevant Windows software.

His first suggestion that it's for maximum portability and
interoperability reasons is instantly quashed by the fact that the
files are unusable and completely incompatible within Windows.

You'll notice he says towards the end This is perfectly legal on
Windows, though some applications may get confused... please report it
to the developer Windows Explorer is the first thing that get's
confused and the command prompt can't manipulate it either, not just
some Windows application, the Windows system. I have not tested
compatibility right through Vista and 7, but it's definitely apparent in
XP and I assume those two as well. The NTFS-3G driver has got to prevent
the use of special characters in the same way that Nautilus prevents
forward slashes being used on ext4 partitions.

The way I see it is, preventing the characters is a much safer option
than allowing.

MP3 player: Creative Zen Mozaic

Expected:
Connect MP3 player to RB and all tracks on the player are listed in RB.

Actual:
Not all tracks listed.

Description:
I can sucessfully connect Zen Mozaic to Rhythmbox and transfer tracks (from CD)
however I've noticed that the list of tracks in Rhythmbox is not complete, and
even connecting Zen later the tracks that I'd just transferred don't list (11
tracks on the album, now only 1 shows in RB) The tracks are still on the
player, the problem is only that RB is not able to list them

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-11-08 Thread David Ward
@Oliver -- I must respectfully disagree with you that the login ready
sound should be on by default for accessibility reasons.

A visually impaired person would not be able to go through the Ubuntu
installation process unassisted -- there are no sounds in Ubiquity.
Whoever is setting up the system for a visually impaired person would
easily be able to enable this sound (or the system manufacturer, in the
case of a pre-loaded system).

In any case, the sound could be much more subtle or inconspicuous and
serve the same purpose. Instead it sounds tacky, and from an HCI
perspective it makes the Ubuntu startup process abrupt in many contexts
that others have described (library, meetings, late night), rather than
one that is natural and user-centric.

I have to challenge this as a design decision.

[Bug 423873] Re: screen brightness flickers at login screen

2009-10-13 Thread Jam Ward
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 415023 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023

I also have the same problem here with the latest 9.10 Alpha release.
I am using an Advent 4211-B (Same as MSI, just a different brand)

Some people have reported that the screen stops 'flashing' after a few
minutes after loggin in. I have tried waiting up to 10 mins, but my
flashing does not stop.

The only way I have found to stop this flashing is to kill the gnome-
power-manager.

[Bug 426195] Re: Setting 'disable_toolbar_editing' to True causes 'Segmentation Fault' exception

2009-09-09 Thread Dan Ward
Following further inspection, it is also apparent that there are one or
more additional settings, which also cause the issue. Unfortunately, I
don't have the time to look further in to it currently.
