[Bug 1926256] Re: Pasted text in the terminal is always highlighted and selected

2023-06-22 Thread Warren Andrews
EDIT: THIS IS THE WORKAROUND:
bind 'set enable-bracketed-paste off'

The proposed work around does NOT work for me. It could be due to the fact that
it is over ssh?
I am sshing from 18.04 into 22.04.
Bash version on former is 4.4.20(1)-release
Bash version on latter is 5.1.16(1)-release

I CANNOT work with this 'feature' enabled. Please help. Thanks. (And
this security argument makes no sense to me... why would I paste text
into a terminal which I didn't select?)

Re: [Bug 1894627] Re: [nvidia] Web browser distorted after hibernation/power save when idle

2020-10-23 Thread Kashad J Turner-Warren
I have attached a screenshot of my screen. I am using Google chrome.
It's that distort box on the top left corner. sometimes, it will fill up my
screen
the same size as the webpage. I have to close the browser completely to
remove it.

[Bug 1500673] Re: gdm unusable after upgrading to 15.10

2015-11-06 Thread Warren
I, too, have this problem. No login screen after upgrade to 15.10 from
15.04.

I have now spent 36 hours trying to get this upgrade to work. I've tried
everything I can find cruising the net. Nothing works. I've gone back
and forth between gdm and lightdm. I've uninstalled and reinstalled
ubuntu-desktop. All that nonsense and a lot more. I've restored file
system backups to the original 15.04 and reapplied the update several
times. Nothing in the syslog to suggest the problem.

At this point I give up. I'm going back to 15.04 and will stay there
until somebody confirms a fix.

The real fix might just be that Canonical stops with these 6-month
releases that don't work and goes to 1-year releases that do.

[Bug 1504444] Re: package gconf2 3.2.6-3ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Here's some more info:

I ran "dpkg --configure -a" as root, which failed.

Then I ran "sudo dpkg --configure -a" as my user with sudo privileges
and it worked. Now my system is not in an unconfigured state.

[Bug 1154049] Re: Crashes with GLib-GIO-CRITICAL. UnknownMethod: Method "DescribeAll"

2014-11-04 Thread Warren
I have had this exact problem for coming up on a year now. It's stayed
with me from 12.04 → 14.04 → 14.10. I can't shake it, after combined
probably 8 hours of searching for fixes and trying every concoction on
the internet. Has anyone yet found a definitive cause and a fix??

Thanks!

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-09-10 Thread Warren
I discovered this problem this morning while trying to set up my laptop
with a bluetooth headset (Moto S305) for a pending video conference.
Some Googling led me to this thread and comment #93, and the fix works
just fine. "Trusty" being a LTS release, there are sure to be many other
people affected indefinitely until an update appears in the standard
"Trusty" ppa's. Hope that will be soon.

[Bug 1302583] [NEW] Brassero Freze while copying Audio CD

2014-04-04 Thread Warren Hill
Public bug reported:

I wanted to copy an Audio CD: Kaiser Chiefs: Education, Education,
Education & War

Steps to reproduce fault.

Put CD in drive,

Offered option to run Brassero or Rhythmbox -- Selected Brassero

Greeted with window recoognising the CD in the drive and asking where to
put copy: Options are image file or new CD.

Select new CD

Starts to copy then after about 2 min freezes no-longer copying and
unable to cancel.

Program eventally closed but only by reporting bug with

ubuntu-bug -w

and clicking on the now frozen window.

Note: I have not played this CD on any device yet so it could be faulty,
unlikely but I'll report back when I have played it to confirm if CD is
OK or not.

[Bug 1058891] [NEW] Help using Xfce (yelp) in Xubuntu 12.04 shows the help page with Welcome to Xubuntu 11.10.

2012-09-29 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

1) Xubuntu 12.04 i386 HDD install
2) yelp 3.4.1-0ubuntu1
3) I expected the help xfce page to display 'Welcome to Xubuntu 12.04' instead
of the 'Welcome to Xubuntu 11.10'. The help xfce in Xubuntu 12.10 does have the
Welcome to Xubuntu 12.10.
4) I experienced the yelp 'Welcome to Xubuntu 11.10' on a 32bit desktop and on
64bit laptop with Xubuntu 12.04 installed. I have attached two screenshots of
the 'Welcome to Xubuntu 11.10' in the Xubuntu 12.04 help page.

Re: [Bug 666457] Re: control fails to play in random order when set at random

2010-10-26 Thread Gregg Warren
I didn't have Banshee installed so I did and it (shuffle) works fine in
Banshee. I also installed Exaile and it shuffles fine there also. It
seems to be limited to Rhythmbox for some reason. Even when clearly
check-marked as "shuffle" it instead simply moves to the next track on
the same album.

Aha. This is a bogus bug. When attempting to debug bug 444300, I had
installed gthumb-2.10.11 in /usr/local. I've now deleted everything
under /usr/local, and don't see the hang that this bug refers to; now I
see bug 444300 manifesting instead.

[Bug 557855] [NEW] gthumb hangs when run to import photos from USB stick

2010-04-07 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

In lucid, when I insert a USB memory stick, something will automatically
mount the USB stick, and then prompt me for which action I wish to take.
I select "Open gThumb Photo Import Tool". The USB stick is then
immediately unmounted, and nothing else happens.

"ps" shows that "gthumb --import-photos" was run. strace on that process
shows that it is hung doing nothing:

[swar...@esk ~]$ ps auxww|grep gth
swarren 3173 1.6 0.8 25300 9012 ?S00:00 0:00 gthumb
--import-photos
swarren 3181 0.0 0.0 3320 784 pts/0S+ 00:01 0:00 grep gth
[swar...@esk ~]$ strace -p 3173
Process 3173 attached - interrupt to quit
restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted call ...>

Manually running "gthumb --import-photos" from an X terminal with the
disk mounted produces the same results (gthumb hangs).

[Bug 378333] Re: gnome-sound-recorder: "Record from input" doesn't show all available inputs

2010-01-31 Thread Stephen Warren
This particular bug seems to have been made obsolete my Lucid (tested
daily 1/31). The "Record from Input" option no longer appears in gnome-
sound-recorder. Instead, it uses the system-wide default/current input
stream selected by "sound preferences", and does appear to record OK.

I don't recall if i originally reported this against Jaunty or Karmic.
It's possible it's also fixed in Karmic; I haven't checked. The bug can
probably be closed as "Fix Released".

You are kidding right? A version that's included in a 3? month old
distro is already unsupported??? I guess it's time to just dump gthumb
and use something that isn't completely pointless...

[Bug 444300] Re: gThumb doesn't import images

2010-01-04 Thread Stephen Warren
FYI, upstream bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=605670 was
closed with the following comment:

> Michael Chudobiak [developer] 2010-01-04 13:49:26 UTC

(That bug was marked as being against 2.8.x, whereas this launchpad bug
is against 2.10.x). Perhaps I'll file a new gnome.org bug specifically
for 2.10.x tonight...

[Bug 444300] Re: gThumb doesn't import images

2010-01-03 Thread Stephen Warren
More info on my strace findings:

For each JPG file, gthumb's strace starts out like:

[pid 4804] open("/media/64A5-F009//DCIM/103_PANA/P1030183.JPG", O_RDONLY) = 21
[pid 4804] fstat64(21, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=72597, ...}) = 0
[pid 4804] mmap2(NULL, 32768, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS,
-1, 0) = 0xb4e75000
[pid 4804] read(21,

[pid 4804] close(21) = 0
[pid 4804] munmap(0xb4e75000, 32768) = 0

But for each MOV file it starts out like:

[pid 4804] open("/media/64A5-F009//DCIM/103_PANA/P1030183.MOV", O_RDONLY) = 21

[pid 4804] close(21) = 0
[pid 4804] munmap(0xb4e75000, 32768) = 0

That said, no package contains libexif-12.mo for US-English in either
Jaunty or Karmic, so this is probably a red-herring. I can't really see
anything else that seems wrong in the strace log; the issue is probably
not in reading the file data, but some parsing/interpretation of some
data in the file.

A bug on gnome.org (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2760486&group_id=8874&atid=108874)
implied that "gthumb --debug -L" might show up something useful. However, that
command correctly identifies the MIME type of all the JPG and MOV files on the
SD card.

There is a bug on gnome.org that sounds like this current bug
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=605670) I asked the reporter to
clarify whether this launchpad bug sounds like his/her issue. If it does, I'll
link that bug as an upstream bug into this bug report.

[Bug 444300] Re: gThumb doesn't import images

2010-01-03 Thread Stephen Warren
Both Jaunty and Karmic contain the same upstream version of gthumb
(2.10.11), so this is probably either a bug in a library that gthumb
uses, rather than gthumb itself, or a bug in Ubuntu's packaging.

[Bug 444300] Re: gThumb doesn't import images

2010-01-03 Thread Stephen Warren
I see this problem too.

It is a regression from Jaunty. I had 2 Jaunty and 1 Fedora (F9/10?)
systems where gthumb import worked correctly. I upgraded the Jaunty
systems and re-installed the Fedora system. All systems now have this
issue.

In my case at least, I found this problem was caused by the presence of
.MOV (movie) files on the SD card. I deleted them, and gthumb import
worked. I'm not sure if this issue is triggered by a) any non-JPG file,
b) MOVs specifically c) some facet/subset of unsupported image formats.
Note that MOV files from the exact same camera/SD-card/card-reader
worked OK in Jaunty.

"strace -f" of "gthumb --import-photos" indicates that gthumb (or a
library it uses) is performing some operation to search the Ubuntu
installation for some kind of file (IIRC a language pack?) after
stat()/open()ing the .MOV file. I'm not sure if this is a bug in gthumb
(or some lib it uses) or perhaps some package it depends on simply isn't
installed?

[Bug 475772] [NEW] totem locks the dvd drive after media is ejected

2009-11-05 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem likes to lock the DVD drive when a DVD is ejected after the drive is
closed again. I tried a manual software eject with the eject command to no
avail. It says there is something using the drive or something. When this
happens, totem displays an incorrect error message on the first DVD eject,
something about not being able to read an encrypted source.
Workaround:
remove the DVD from the totem playlist.

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-10-25 Thread Stephen Warren
The patch from comment #33 didn't seem to work for me. I don't know if
it was a fluke, but it appeared to prevent my X login from working
correctly; it just hung after removing all the gdm windows and with a
brightness notification on-screen. After removing the patch from a text
console and rebooting, login worked fine again...

[Bug 460062] [NEW] brightness autonomously toggles after increasing brightness

2009-10-24 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This bug is very similar to bug 456057, but there are a couple of critical
differences that I think warrant a new bug:
a) The user in bug 4567057 found that he couldn't change brightness without
gnome-power-manager running. I can on my laptop.
b) Bug 456057 could apparently be reproduced without gnome-power-manager (i.e.
xubuntu/xfce), whereas I've found killing gnome-power-manager actively solves
my problem.

On to my bug:

I have an MSI Wind U100 laptop (model MS-N011 according to the sticker
on the bottom). The laptop has hot-keys to control the backlight
brightness (Fn+F4/F5). If I lower the brightness this way, everything is
OK. If I raise the brightness, something autonomously keeps toggling the
brightness up/down one level (or some fairly small amount). I am running
a standard Gnome desktop in Karmic UNR (dist-upgrade'd from Jaunty UNR).
Things I have observed:

1) The toggling starts soon after the gdm login screen starts after reboot
2) The toggling starts when I increase the brightness using the keyboard
3) The toggling starts if I execute . /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants;
sudo acpi_fakekey $KEY_BRIGHTNESSUP"
4) The toggling lasts while (many seconds;maybe 10-30) and usually stops on its
own. Just occasionally it doesn't ever stop on it's own.
5) The toggling stops within a few seconds if I VT-switch to a console
6) The toggling stops immediately if I "kill `pidof gnome-power-manager`"
7) The toggling doesn't start if I adjust the brightness using the keyboard
whilst in a VT console
8) The toggling doesn't start if I execute the commands from (3) above in a VT
console (and those commands have no effect)
9) The toggling doesn't start if I log into a "Gnome failsafe" session.
10) The toggling doesn't start if I log into an "Xterm" session.
11) I can adjust the brightness using the keyboard after having killed
gnome-power-manager.
12) If I restart gnome-power-manager, the brightness immediately shoots up to
full, and starts toggling between max and max-1.

I have gnome-power-manager package 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.

OK, thanks for bothering to answer my previous question then. I figured
that since nobody answered, it was a mistake.

I'd also debate that it's not serious enough to warrant an update, since
IIRC it blocks bzr-gtk from working, since it crashes. I suppose it's
easy to just re-run the command, but why should anyone have to?

various revisions, and also selected the "Signature" tab. Most of the
time, bzr-gtk will simply say "Signature key not available" (that seems
like another bug...) when switching to view a revision with a signature.
However, sometimes, bzr-gtk will hang, and after a few seconds spew the
following backtrace:

[swar...@esk test1]$ bzr viz

Right after this happens, seahorse-agent (or seahorse-daemon, whichever
it is) will start sucking a lot of CPU, and also growing its RAM usage
very fast. If it isn't killed quickly, it'll consume all physical RAM
and grow into swap. The CPU usage and resulting swap storm make the
system almost entirely unresponsive; even switching VTs and text-mode
login doesn't work. Sometimes, switching VTs and CTRL-ALT-DEL will
gracefully restart. (As an aside, epic fail for the kernel; OOM killer
ended up killing some completely irrelevant and tiny Apache process,
then not bothering to ever kill anything else, like the runaway seahorse
process)

so as to avoid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr-gtk/+bug/377476. I don't

[Bug 377476] Re: bzr visualize crashed with DBus error

2009-10-02 Thread Stephen Warren
How come this is marked "Fix Released" for "Seahorse (Ubuntu)"? I'm
still seeing it on Jaunty with the bzr PPA enabled:

bzr 1.13.1-1
bzr-dbus 0.1~bzr36-3
bzr-gtk0.97.0-1~bazaar1~jaunty1
bzrtools 1.13.0-1
seahorse 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
seahorse-plugins 2.26.1-0ubuntu1

Note: The upstream bug report says the fix will be in Gnome 2.26.3,
which as far as I can tell has been released containing seahorse 2.26.2,
so this could be included in Jaunty?

[Bug 394849] [NEW] Cannot pick up e-mail.

2009-07-02 Thread Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using ubuntu 9.04 on a partitioned disk with Vista. I loaded my e-mail
information in Evolution. When I click Send/Receive I get the message “There
are no messages in this folder” when messages are in my e-mail account. Also, I
am not able to change my password even if I delete my login information and
reenter it or click “Forget Password”. Which password should I use I have two,
E-mail and network.
Thanks, Warren

[Bug 378333] Re: gnome-sound-recorder: "Record from input" doesn't show all available inputs

2009-06-12 Thread Stephen Warren
I just went to bugzilla.gnome.org, and
a) Read the titles of all open bugs against Gnome-Sound-Recorder
b) Searched bugs in all states (open, closed, ...) for comments that mention
"pulse" and then again for "pulseaudio".

None of those bugs describe this problem.

[Bug 383039] [NEW] gedit crashes on large text files

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am trying to open a 480MB text file (503604718 bytes to be exact) and
gedit crashes suddenly when I try to open it. My guess would be that it

[Bug 378333] Re: gnome-sound-recorder: "Record from input" doesn't show all available inputs

2009-05-27 Thread Stephen Warren
That doesn't make sense; if I could have found the bug in the first
place, I wouldn't have filed a new one...

This policy also doesn't help the other people who find all the dups via
google, see they've all just been closed out, and have to file a new one
because they can't find the original.

[Bug 378333] Re: gnome-sound-recorder: "Record from input" doesn't show all available inputs

2009-05-26 Thread Stephen Warren
No, my behaviour is not confrontational. In fact, to be honest, I found
your behaviour (just closing the bug without any useful information at
all) quite aggressive.

* If the bug is not a bug, then by all means close it (and state why, so
that everyone else who is affected by this problem and finds this bug by
Google/... will understand).

* If the bug is a duplicate, mark it as such, and state which specific
bug it's a duplicate of. You need to state why so that (a) I can go
subscribe to the "parent" bug. (b) Everyone else who finds this bug by
Google/... will find useful information, not just yet another dead-end.
Calling a dup "invalid" is also pretty insulting.

* Otherwise, the bug must stay open; it's a valid bug that needs to be
fixed. I can't see why this isn't self-evident.

This is simply normal bug processing practice!

Reopening. Simply closing the bug claiming that it's a dup without proof

[Bug 378334] [NEW] gnome-volume-control: USB headset volume buttons affect laptop speakers, not headset speakers

2009-05-19 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I have a Plantronics USB headset with speakers, microphone, and buttons
for volume up/down and mute.

When I plug this headset into my laptop, and use the volume control
buttons on the headset, it controls the volume on the PC speakers, not
the headset playback volume like it should.

Similarly, the mute button on the headset doesn't seem to control any
mute option for any device that shows up on gnome-volume-control
(although I do see it activating the red mute LED on the headset). It's
possible this button is handled internally by the USB headset itself, to
mute the mic. Because of bug 378333, I can't record from the mic to
validate if this is the case though.

[Bug 378333] [NEW] gnome-sound-recorder: "Record from input" doesn't show all available inputs

2009-05-19 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

When I run gnome-sound-recorder, there's a GUI element labelled "Record
from input" and a drop-down that displays a single option "Capture".

The Gnome volume control indicates that I have two sound input sources;
one "Capture: Monitor of Intel ICH6 - Intel ICH6 (PulseAudio Mixer)"
(which I assume records whatever is being played) and another "Capture:
Intel ICH6 - Intel ICH6 (PulseAudio Mixer)" (which I assume would record
from a mic plugged into the mic in socket)

So, it's surprising that I can't select these options in gnome-sound-
recorder.

What's worse is that if I plug in a USB headset with speakers and a mic
(Plantronics, not sure of the model #), then the volume control applet
shows two additional capture sources; "Capture: Monitor of Plantronics
Headset - USB Audio (PulseAudio Mixer)" and also "Capture: Plantronics
Headset - USB Audio (PulseAudio Mixer)"

Again, if I restart gnome-sound-recorder after plugging in this USB
headset, and seeing the new sources in the volume control applet, then
gnome-sound-recorder still won't show anything but "Capture" in the
"Record from input" list.

Needless to say, this means that I can't record any audio (since either
the option "Capture" is simply invalid, or perhaps because the default
is the laptop built-in mic, but my laptop doesn't actually have a mic)
