[Bug 1961508] Re: Dock displaying over window after resuming from blank screen
FYI: My temporary workaround is to just have the Dock to auto-hide (for Ubuntu 22.04). This way there are no windows that might get stuck underneath the Dock. This essentially solves the issue in a simple way, but the only downside is that some folks prefer to see their Dock all the time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961508 Title: Dock displaying over window after resuming from blank screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dash-to-dock/+bug/1961508/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 2035016] Re: one of 3 monitors "frozen" when a window moves there
Here's another journal from the boot after the one before, with the same settings as before (I've set MUTTER_DEBUG_TRIPLE_BUFFERING=never but not yet rebooted). My primary display should have multiple hangs in the last couple of minutes here. I unwisely fullscreened a YouTube video in Firefox, and recovered by replugging my docking station. This repeated a few times, with a LUKS unlock prompt sometimes stopping it from hanging until I dismissed the dialog, until I hit Esc to de-fullscreen the video and replugged one last time. I think my secondary display might also have hung at some point during this boot, but I forget. ** Attachment added: "a journal from several single-display hangs in one session" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2035016/+attachment/5702630/+files/journal-redacted.txt.zst -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2035016 Title: one of 3 monitors "frozen" when a window moves there To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2035016/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1
@ BloodyIron It looks like the problem you are experiencing is the same issue as I have had. I think the reason that it works after you kill gvfsd-smb-browse is that your FreeNAS server is advertising itself via mDNS, and gvfsd will see that. You don't need SMB1 or WSDD for gvfsd to discover your NAS. But it is also looking for a "Windows Network" (i.e. the Windows "network neighborhood" or workgroup that shows up as a separate subfolder) using SMB1, and that fails if the server does not provide SMB1. Crucially, however, it fails in a way that leaves the gvfsd-smb-browse process in a bad state where it fails to allow browsing of the server even though it has been discovered via mDNS. I encourage you to take a look at my patch, or to use the PPA at https://launchpad.net/~wmaddox3rd/+archive/ubuntu/gvfs-smb-sharelist- patch. It does indeed look like there is a bug here in that attempting discovery via SMB1 somehow breaks browsing of the server discovered via mDNS. See also my remarks here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gvfs/-/issues/307#note_1632096 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1828107 Title: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gvfs/+bug/1828107/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1
Inspired by BloodyIron's comments above, I investigated this issue and was able to develop a patch that solves this problem for my use case: browsing NAS devices running TrueNAS and OpenMediaVault. It appears that the gvfsd-smb-browse process is left in a bad state after attempting to mount a workgroup, which occurs either when attempting to open an URL like smb://WORKGROUP/ or during network discovery in gvfsd- network. My patch simply disables workgroup discovery/browsing functionality, leaving *browsing* functionality intact for servers that are *discovered* via DNS-SD (mDNS). This does not address the issue of discovering Windows 10 servers that advertise themselves only via WS- Discovery, but appears to work fine for devices that advertise themselves using mDNS, allowing those devices to be successfully browsed. I note that workgroups are an obsolete concept in a post-NT1 (post-SMB1) world, so the offending code should eventually just be yanked out, along with the addition of support for WS-Discovery in Linux. My patch does not address the root cause, as whatever is going wrong while attempting to mount a workgroup should result in a recoverable error. I traced gvfsbackendsmbbrowse.c:do_mount() up to the point at which smbc_opendir() is called without any surprises, whereupon things went south. I did not investigate any further, but if I were to do so, I'd be inclined to take a look for an unreleased lock. ** Patch added: "Disable broken workgroup discovery/browsing" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/1828107/+attachment/5639041/+files/smb-browse-patch.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1828107 Title: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gvfs/+bug/1828107/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1961508] Re: Dock displaying over window after resuming from blank screen
Hi, I just wanted to say that I am also having this problem. I'm on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with all of the available updates applied. In the attached screenshot, you'll see my terminal window as being underneath the Dock, which I didn't have it like that originally. It tends to happen after unlocking the screen. I do not have the Dock set to use the Auto-hide mode and I've tried using the Dock in both panel and non-panel mode. This bug is super annoying as I need to click the "Restore Down" and then "Maximize" in the window controls in each affected application window to get them fixed temporarily. --William ** Attachment added: "Terminal window underneath the Dock now. [Bug 1987162] Re: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently
I think the whole concept of numeric security "levels" is wrong. Instead there should be a list of threats: - physical (address by using LUKS, disabling USB ports, locking screen after N minutes inactivity, etc) - bad apps (address by enabling AppArmor or SELinux etc, using Snaps or Flatpaks, using fewer PPAs, doing updates, etc) - OS vulns (address by doing updates) - network attacks (address by enabling firewall on computer, enabling firewall in router, turning off unused services, blockers in browser, etc) - user mistakes (address by not running as root, using immutable OS, etc) And I would lump in some partially-security things too: - data loss due to hardware failure or user error (backups: suggest TimeShift etc) - network security/privacy attacks (suggest VPN) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1987162 Title: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1987162/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04
Noticed previously that the status of my working Gnome (Ubuntu 16.04) desktop's GDM3 service is a bit different than the bugged machine. Attached is a series of systemctl status updates before and after stopping and starting the GDM3 service. Note that I did not run any other systemctl command against GDM3 since the last reboot for this output. There seems to be differences in opening and closing sessions involving PAM. My working system starts a PAM session and leaves it running. In the non-working system it appears that GDM ends the session shortly after opening it, and some child processes have died right away as well. ** Attachment added: "systemctl_status_gdm3_001.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1777378/+attachment/5153858/+files/systemctl_status_gdm3_001.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1777378 Title: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1777378/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Daniel, I am not sure what to do with apport-collect 1777378 from #3, since it is waiting in vein for a web-browser to open. This won't happen since I have no GUI desktop at present. [Bug 1718554] Re: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices
I could not replicate for my latest photos this evening what I reported in #8. Yet by fiddling in various ways, after a reboot I was able to coax shotwell to import the photos on the iPhone. I then had command line access to those photos in the location where shotwell dropped them. As for /run/user/1000/gvfs: the robotic gphoto name appeared there on and off, but when it was there it appeared to be empty from the command line. As a comment on my #8, it would seem that the appearance of the robotic gphoto name in /run/user/1000/gvfs has something to do with a prior running of shotwell. (The shotwell executable in Xenial links to two gphoto runtime libraries.) I don't know what is going on. It's certainly less than transparent access through the lightning port to the usb file system on the iPhone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to libimobiledevice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1718554 Title: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimobiledevice/+bug/1718554/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1718554] Re: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices
EUREKA (maybe) ! This evening I took the iPhone update to iOS 11.3, and just out of curiosity I decided to check out the iphone as an attached device in the file manager. And I'm in. I don't know why. I did not use idevicepair nor ifuse. If I run ideviceinfo, I still get "ERROR: Could not connect to lockdownd, error code -3". In the file manager I found that clicking on a thumbnail gave me the photo. Messing around in the command line, a call to "df" suggested that I look at "/run/user/1000". Going there I found a current datestamp on its subdirectory "gvfs" and within that a sole item with robotic name "gphoto2:host=%5Busb%3A004%2C023%5D". Inside that there is a single directory "DCIM" (less than I used to see in iOS 10.3), but that has always been the place for photos. Within DCIM there are subdirectories "100CLOUD" and "100APPLE". I'm not sure what that's about, but the photos in the first are older and are all of size 3264x2448. During the time period for the photos in 100CLOUD, I changed to a new phone, but the latest photos in there were taken on the new phone. In 100APPLE the photos are all of size 4032x3024. I'm guessing that usb infra-structure invoked some gphoto infra- structure, and that libimobiledevice is not in the picture, but I don't know. And for the moment I'm guessing that Apple has cleaned up its act with iOS 11.3. My Ubuntu is 16.04.4 LTS, and I'm running the Mate evolute of classic gnome. In the Mate GUI connecting the phone to a usb port causes an icon to appear on my desktop. A right click on that icon gives me an unmount option that I used before disconnecting the phone.
At the github site referenced here at the top it is said: -- "On newer iOS version, ValidatePair is not mandatory to gain trusted host status. Starting with iOS 11, the ValidatePair request has been removed from lockdownd and will throw an error. This commit adds a version check so that ValidatePair is only called on devices prior iOS 7." -- I'm looking for clarity here. As I understand it, libimobiledevice issues a formerly required ValidatePair call, and iOS 11 throws a killing error. Is that right? Isn't it reasonable that iOS 11 could just ignore it and keep going? That is, isn't this something that one could ask Apple to fix? Moreover, I still fail to understand why USB access to the iPhone file system is so bizarre. There is adequate authentication when (1) the iPhone is unlocked by the user and (2) the user responds on the unlocked phone to the question "Trust this computer?". It should then be the responsibility of iOS to show the unjailed part of the file system transparently through the lightning port. (In mentioning "jail", why are the vcards behind "Contacts" not outside of jail? There can be no legitimate reason for that.) One is left with the impression that Apple has little respect for inter- operability with anything that is not Apple. It would seem that the only Apple-supported ways to move photos from an iPhone to a Linux platform are (1) email (one photo at a time) or (2) iCloud via the web, provided that the user allows iCloud backups from the phone. (The website at icloud.com is not itself fully inter-operable. For example, it says that it does not support Android mobile devices when it is called from my Android tablet.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to libimobiledevice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1718554 Title: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimobiledevice/+bug/1718554/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu
Continuing #55: Given the change with libimobiledevice between iOS 10.3 and iOS 11+, I decided to take a look at shotwell. The curious thing is that shotwell displays correct thumbnails for all photos on the iphone. That is curious because AIUI the jpegs generated by the iphone camera contain embedded thumbnails using exif. But shotwell fails to import a single photo, even one at a time. For each photo the shotwell log contains a line like this: IMG_0002.JPG error message: [-107] Error retrieving file object for /store_feedface/DCIM/100APPLE/IMG_0002.JPG: Unknown error Yet it gets a thumbnail. [Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu
Following up to my #49: I'm working with Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS. The Martin Salbaba ppa had been working for me with an iphone 5 and iOS 10.3 Recently I went to a new phone running iOS 11, and I fail to get to photos with ifuse after an apparently successful "idevicepair pair". Ifuse complains about "lockdownd". The libimobiledevice packages show version 1.2.0+git20161018-3salbabix27xenial. The ifuse package shows version 1.1.2-0.1build3. At bug 1718554, there is the suggestion of a procedure for re-building from source. It is said that this will fix the problem. I have not tried it. I would rather have an updated package rather than blindly follow building-from-source instructions. Question: Is the Martin Salbaba ppa the standard location for the libimobiledevice6 and libimobiledevice-utils packages? I wish to second the request of #5 that working access to photos on iphones be kept up to date in xenial. For the credibility of xenial's LTS status this should be done. Up to the recent time of a new device with iOS 11, I had things working with iOS 10.3 using Martin Salbaba's ppa for the packages libimobiledevice6 and libimobiledevice-utils. Even going for a ppa raises unnecessary system maintenance work for something as basic as retrieving photos from a phone. My impression is that there have been repeated stumbling blocks related to the issue of whether iOS wants ssl or tls. I would like to hope that ubuntu at runtime can decide to go either way even if iOS (which should be able to go either way) cannot. (Maybe this is an oversimplification.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to libimobiledevice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1718554 Title: Need updated libimobiledevice to mount IOS 11 devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimobiledevice/+bug/1718554/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I had the blank screen, no login screen problem. The computer was otherwise running though. I ssh-ed from another computer to the problem computer to execute the suggested commands. If on a home network you can login to your router with a web browser to get the IP address for your problem computer. Mine was 192.168.1.3 The following fixed the problem for me. First I did (without the comment). sudo apt-get install lightdm # This showed lightdm was installed Second I did uname -r and found the completion for the linux-headers-$(uname -r) command. I don't know why I didn't use the suggested: sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r) Then I did the suggested commands, one after the other: sudo apt purge gdm3 sudo apt purge nvidia* sudo apt install linux-headers-4.13.0-16-generic # ADJUST THIS sudo apt install nvidia-384 sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm # Suggested when 1st command ran sudo shutdown -r now # Restart Went to the problem computer, the login screen came up. [Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu
I've had success with newly installed 16.04.3 LTS following steps 8 - 11 given in #44 after installing the October 2016 ppa for 16.04 from Martin Salbaba. That is, my first 3 steps were: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:martin-salbaba/ppa+libimobiledevice sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After retrieving my photos and before disconnecting the iPhone, I suggest idevicepair unpair fusermount -u x (where x is the "mount point"). One more note: I was running the Mate Desktop. When I connected the (unlocked) iPhone, the program "Shotwell" appeared. I did not want to use it. The alternate selection was Caja (Mate's file manager similar to Nautilus), but Caja was not seeing the phone. (The command lsusb was seeing the phone.) I selected "unmount" in the requester offering "Shotwell" just in case Shotwell did have access before I proceeded to use idevicepair. I seem to have a solution that is satisfactory for me -- especially because I want to have command-line access to the photos, and using idevicepair and ifuse makes the mounted location of the photos quite explicit to me since I specify the mount point. I do think, however, that many LTS desktop users will want something such as what Mate purports to offer. I also completely fail to understand why Apple thinks that lightening port access to the small user portion of the iPhone filesystem requires either SSL or TLS. [Bug 1674477] Re: gnome screenshot gtk-mir crashes on taking the shot under Mir
I don't know if that would be the easiest approach. It sounds to me like having U8 implement that dbus interface would be the easiest and least invasive solution, but then again, I'm not the one volunteering for that :) Is there some mir client api for scraping the screen? I'm worried about whether or not that kind of change would be accepted upstream (there's no wayland-specific code in gnome-screenshot). Also, how does it look from a security perspective? The nice thing about that interface is that the screenshot app never has direct access to the pixel data in the first place (it's just file names that U8 would save the image data directly to), and access to the interface could be restricted via apparmor dbus rules. ** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Tags removed: gtk-mir -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1674477 Title: gnome screenshot gtk-mir crashes on taking the shot under Mir To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1674477/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1672176] [NEW] After windows 10 hybrid sleep/wake ntfs partition seen as unsafe to mount
Public bug reported: Running 16.04.2 live desktop. Windows 10 1607 installed on NVMe SSD. After windows sleep/wake, hibernate/resume, restart, or full shutdown I can mount the NTFS partition. If _hybrid sleep_ is enabled, after sleep/wake NTFS partition is seen as unsafe to mount. This persists after restarts, full shutdown, etc until hibernation is disabled. Error reported is same as if mount was attempted with windows hibernated, but it is not. Windows thinks the partition is clean. chkdsk reports no problems and doesn't correct the issue. [Bug 1278437] Re: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop
I am running Ubuntu 16.04.2 and still see the bug. I downloaded the source package nautilus_3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu5 and observed that the upstream patch referenced in comment #19 was *not* present. I applied the patch, ran configure/make, and the resulting nautilus binary no longer exhibited the bug. Can we get an updated package for 16.04? It seems it would ease the pain for a lot of people and should be easy to do. I'm not an Ubuntu or Debian developer, and do not know the niceties of preparing a proper package for distribution. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278437 Title: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1278437/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 245716] Re: file-roller puts temporary files in the home dir instead of /tmp
I tracked down this bug. The source of the problem is in src/file- utils.c. It looks like File Roller calls _g_path_get_temp_work_dir, which searches the user's cache dir, user's home dir, and tmp, for a place to put the temporary folder. It searches in that order. The criteria for the search is available free space. The location with the most free space will be used. If two locations have the same amount of free space, the one searched first will be used. The bug is that, at least on my system, /tmp and ~/.cache both have the same amount of free space. So ~/.cache gets used, since it's searched first. This searching algorithm is reasonable, as opposed to just always using /tmp. What if File Roller is run on a system where /tmp is limited, and now the user can't extract an archive because /tmp keeps blowing up. So it makes sense to use whatever has the most available disk space. I suggest fixing this by changing the search order. The search order is defined by: static const char *try_folder[] = { "cache", "~", "tmp", NULL }; Let's change that to: static const char *try_folder[] = { "tmp", "cache", "~", NULL }; It's a simple change, and for systems like mine, where /tmp is part of the root filesystem, File Roller will use tmp since it should have the same free space as cache. A better solution may be a compile time option to force a particular folder, or a run-time preference. In both cases it will be up to the distro to configure the appropriate compile option or default preference, according to how their distro installs. If someone lets me know: where to pull the latest File Roller source code, and how to submit a patch, I can at least submit a patch tweaking try_folder. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245716 Title: file-roller puts temporary files in the home dir instead of /tmp To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/file-roller/+bug/245716/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
