I experience exactly the same. It tends to happen when evolution has been started and is in its usual 5-10 minutes long checking of changed mails during which it is unusable. My situation is the same but worse, it hangs and blocks all inputs to the UI. The mouse pointer moves and system monitor applet updates but mouse clicks and UI specific keyboard commands don't work. Only work around is to alt-tab-f1, log in command line, kill the evolution process, and alt-tab-f7 back to work system.
