I think I found the cause of this problem, it's Compiz. Steps to reproduce: 1. In menu System, select Preferences, Appearance. Select tab Visual Effects. 2. Select None. Now, open a graphics file in eog, and start a slideshow. The toolbar is shown, but disappears after about 4 seconds. 3. Select Normal, or Extra. Now, open a graphics file in eog, and start a slideshow. The toolbar is shown. After about 4 seconds, the screen flashes (partially) to black, with the image and toolbar still partially visable. After some time the flashing stops, but the toolbar is still visible. During the flashes the slideshow continues to rotate pictures. I'm using a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, with "ati" driver. On one machine the toolbar is visible all the time (in slideshow). I've checked on another machine and it does disappear there. The weird thing is that on the first machine the screen flashes to black a few times. Perhaps it has something to do with Compiz or another program.
