And I have the same problem too after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 on my ASUS W6F notebook. Not sure if this is the same bug but (it sound similar) :
Sometimes (every 5-10 reboots) my computer hangs while loading gnome. The
desktop looks normal, but I cannot start/fork any process. When I switch to
console, I can login as user, start some simple programs (ls,kill,tail) but
anything that that is somehow connected to network (ifconfig, mc, sudo (?))
hangs on (after I strace is):
ioctl(3,SIOCGIFCONF,{
After a programs hangs - there is no way to kill it (even with -9
signal)
I cannot even shutdown my computer (Alt-Ctrl-Del) - everythings hangs on
killing first process (postfix)
I have no idea how to diagnose further this bug and I would appreciate
any help.

I have got the same problem with the newly installed version 8.04. Actually, when I used previous versions this never happened to me. Now I moved to Hardy Heron, but I also I don't use J-pilot any more, I have moved to evolution, Before doing so, I did a workaround: instead of starting J-Pilot directly I did the following script sleep 10; jpilot Having a delay gives time to startup the gnome-panels before the jpilot starts... (jpilot also can display some alarms at startup...) and with this delay it seems that it does not fail (in ubuntu 7.10).. but as it failed from time to time I can not be sure of it. now is a bit difficult, I have some applications running as a server and these days we are doing a demo. I will move to hardy heron soon. But I think that the problem is the way the different applications start. Even that you can set up an order, they are starting in paral.lel so their can be some problems.
