I've tried out the LiveCD desktop version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron as you described. It seems as if the problem doesn't exist there anymore. I've also tried out LiveCD desktop and installed desktop version of Ubuntu 7.10 again. There the problem doesn't also exist anymore. So, I think the problem was solved with one update during the last weeks.
