[Bug 1835956] Re: Deleting "Input Sources" not in use, affects the ones in use.

2019-07-11 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I tried to reproduce this (on 19.04). Added these layouts:

1. Spanish (Latin American)
2. Spanish (Win Keys)
3. Spanish (dead tilde)
4. Spanish

Then I activated them in that order (and used each of them to type some
characters).

With "Spanish" (shown as "esâ‚„") active I used Region & Language to
remove the other Spanish variants. "Spanish" was changed to be shown as
"es" (as expected) but I couldn't observe any problems to keep typing
using the Spanish layout.

So however you proceed with this, I think it's necessary that you make
up a reproducible use case. If you succeed in that, then please be very
specific about which keys don't result in the expected symbols. The
"Show Keyboard Layout" option is useful to see which layout is active.

Sorry, what I wrote was not really clear.

The way things work is that gnome-control-center is used to add layouts
to the session configuration. It's only used during that initial step
where you go through the settings UI -> region to add things

If you reboot your computer and log in the layouts should be listed in
the top left indicator and you should be able to cycle through them. If
the 'wrong keys' problem is still happening at this point the problem is
probably not with how gnome-control-center apply the changes, it's
either with how the system handle the layouts configured or gnome-
control-center applying a wrong configuration

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by "not only
after adding but continuing after a session restart using the
indicator/keybindings and not the settings?"

Now I'm thinking maybe this is somehow related to the problem mentioned
before, that sometimes the "Input Source in use" indicator changes, but
the keyboard keeps behaving the same way.

I'll check the gnome-shell list to see if I can add any information to a
related bug, or maybe opening a new one.

Thanks.

2019-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for the info, it's a bit puzzling still. I guess the behaviour
was not only after adding but continuing after a session restart using
the indicator/keybindings and not the settings? (in which case it's
probably more a bug on the shell/server side). Also it would be good to
report it upstream since they are likely to have a better understanding
of those details (e.g on https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/)

[Bug 1835956] Re: Deleting "Input Sources" not in use, affects the ones in use.

2019-07-10 Thread josedorrego
So I tried something I hadn't tried before, and it worked

I installed "Spanish" as input source, and deleted all the others,
including English (which I never tried deleting before). With only this
layout available, I checked, and it works just as I expect it to. After
that, I added "English (US, intl., with dead keys) back again, and now
both of the layouts work OK, the spanish one didn't get affected this
time.

So now, I have just the two layouts that I'll be using. Before this, I
had 3 or 4 spanish layouts installed, but would use only one of them.
Nevertheless, couldn't erase the ones I wouldn't use, because that would
change the behaviour of the useful one, so I had to stick with all of
them.

Nevertheless, don't hesitate to ask for more information if it is needed
to solve the bug I reported in the first place.

Thank you!

Sorry, I sent my previous comment by mistake. Let me answer your
questions:

-Thank you for your bug report, can you trigger the issue again using
the same steps?

No problem!
Yes, I did it several times until I realized what the problem was. I even
trying rebooting to check if that would solve something. (sometimes "Win key" +
"Spacebar" will change the name of the layout in use, but would not change the
keyboard behaviour but I think that's a different bug).

-Thank you for your bug report, can you trigger the issue again using the same
steps?

The problem is I'm not sure which is the keyboard layout that should go with my
keyboard. This is my keyboard layout:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribuci%C3%B3n_del_teclado#/media/Archivo:KB_Spanish.svg

If you could let me know which is the name of the layout that should
work, I can try that one by itself and then adding some more.

Thanks for your time!

Thank you for your bug report, can you trigger the issue again using the
same steps?

If you add directly the layout you are interested in, is it correct? and
if not what key is not behaving as expected?
