[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
Thanks. That confirms there is no EDID coming from the screen, so Linux has to guess about the signalling method. Turns out you're not the first to encounter this bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97822 So the good news is the hardware is not faulty but just unusual. One user says: > I have an HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Non-Touch All-in-One PC which > also has the Bang & Olufsen logo at the top left of the screen. > I have the exact same problem as described with the graphics. When > I switch from BIOS mode (default) on the computer to UEFI mode the > graphics started to work as expected. However note that changing the BIOS mode probably requires reinstalling Ubuntu after that. Still, it sounds well worth trying. ** Summary changed: - DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen + [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of the screen ** No longer affects: mutter (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906086 Title: [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1906086/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was empty. I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All successful, although only in top half of the screen. Thanks Daniel. BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu. xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty. I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half of the screen. [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
Hi Glenn, That first screenshot in comment #17 is most telling. It shows the BIOS screen is rendered half right and half wrong. So given some of the problems persist in the BIOS screen (when no OS is running) AND in Windows 10, I think it's likely the screen is faulty and needs replacing. But maybe we can still improve the Linux situation... Next, 1. Please verify the problem occurs in both 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Wayland' sessions. 2. Log into a regular 'Ubuntu' session and run: xrandr --verbose > xrandrv.txt cat /sys/class/drm/*/edid > edids.bin and attach the resulting files here. 3. Look in Settings > Screen Display and try selecting different values of 'Resolution' and 'Refresh Rate'. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete ** Also affects: mutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906086 Title: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1906086/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
OK. You would need to install Ubuntu before you can choose Wayland. But it's not guaranteed to fix things. And if you see related problems in Windows 10 then it sounds like the hardware is faulty :( Maybe not badly faulty... if the problem is just incorrect timing info in the monitor's EDID. It's not unusual for manufacturers to mess up EDIDs so hopefully that's the only problem. Regardless, if this is fixable in software then it sounds kernel-related so reassigning... ** Package changed: mutter (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906086 Title: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1906086/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hi Daniel. Here is the screenshot of the start up options. There is no 'Ubuntu on Wayland' option available to me at start up. I have tried each option, without success at this point. Windows is still affected. Hard to show as the bottom half "haze" is very light today. Yes that's due to safe mode. Safe mode isn't a fix, it's just a temporary workaround. It will give you the wrong resolution and no hardware acceleration either. Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
Thanks Daniel. I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well. The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768. So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response. [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
Thanks Daniel. Screenshot attached. I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just hard to read).
