I applied maintenance today and no longer see the problem. I believe it was fixed with gnome-desktop (1:2.22.1-0ubuntu5) release some hours ago. That patch is related to bug 199960 which also relates to gnome-settings-daemon not starting. Confirmed with nvidia-glx-legacy driver and [GeForce2 GTS/Pro. Compiz won't run on my system without xserver-xgl. I can also confirm this. I'm using an ATI Radeon Mobility X700. I think this problem could be related to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/199960 although this doesn't have a solution other than uninstalling xserver-xgl, it might provide some extra background. I can confirm this bug. Running Hardy, gnome-settings-daemon fails to start if xserver-xgl is installed. I attach a screenshot. As a result everything looks ugly, and configuration (e.g. autostart) is not applied.
