I have the same problem. For me it happened when I upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB. First I thought it might be a problem with MTRRs, but it seems only gdm is making problems. KDM works fine and if I start gnome-sesion via $HOME/.xsession, this works too... I'm using the Human-theme with face browser. I'm not sure how I can debug this.
