It sounds like the problem is that you were using a server that does not support the NICKSERV command. Use of this command is intentional since it is more secure than /msg, and as Denis mentioned, you can override and use /msg if you really wish to. I have such problem after an upgrade from elder version of XChat. IRC server I use accepts only /msg nickserv IDENTIFY password command. It seems, that XChat sends /nickserv IDENTIFY password to server. If server doesn't accept this command alias, authentication fails.
