[Bug 307149] Re: gnome-open and gksudo -k gnome-open should open the same application

2008-12-11 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for your report, but this isn't a bug in libgnome. libglib /
libgio does all the work for this, and it behaves as expected (it uses
the current users preferences, which if you have launched it via sudo or
gksu, will be the root user).

I think you've misunderstood what the environment is when referring to
gksu -k preserving the users environment. Your users environment does
not include user settings (such as what applications handle which
mimetypes), but the environment variables that are currently set. To
view your users environment, just type env.

I'm closing this bug, as what you've described is not a bug, and the
application is behaving as expected.

Please feel free to report any other issues you find.

** Changed in: libgnome (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

Re: [Bug 307149] Re: gnome-open and gksudo -k gnome-open should open the same application

2008-12-11 Thread Hendrik
Dear Chris,

thanks for your answer.

While your arguments for why the issue should not be considered a bug
are convincing, I still believe that there should be a feature that
solves the problem I described (i.e. open a file with root privileges,
but with the user-defined application).

I knew that gksu -k only refers to the environment variables. However,
if $HOME is set to the user's home, doesn't it make sense to use the
MIME applications specified there (in
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list)?
For me, the question seems to be whether it's better to find the right
application by looking at (e.g.) $USER or at $HOME - but since I don't
know the internals of gnome-open, I might be completely off there.

If this is not a bug, do you think it would make sense to submit a
feature request for an open with the user-local application option in
gnome-open?

Regards

Hendrik
