[Bug 31295] Busy cursor flickers alot
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31295 Comment: Filed bug with Nvidia, and got the answer: "This issue is known bug 204345". Sadly, the bug database is closed for the public, so that number helps little if at all. But anyway, Nvidia acknowledges that this is their problem. Just gotta hope they fix it too... -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 31295] Busy cursor flickers alot
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31295 Comment: Ok, after much digging and research it turns out that this seems to be a bug with Nvidia and their drivers. It's the hardware cursor that is borked in some way. Setting SWCursor to "true" fixes the issue... for normal dekstop use, but then it doesn't work in any accelerated environment such as video or 3D. I guess that means that the bug is invalid for this package at least, sorry to have bothered (but thankful for any tips). Still, perhaps a non-animated alternative could be provided by default as stop-gap? -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 31295] Busy cursor flickers alot
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31295 Comment: For what it's worth, I've tried another, few years older laptop today, also at 60Hz, but running Breezy. And it has no effect such as this at all. Is it most likely that it is computer, OS or theme? Should I try and bring this old computer up to Dapper or is there no meaning with that? -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 31295] Busy cursor flickers alot
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31295 Comment: Well what do you know, I found an easy testcase: http://www.quirksmode.org/css/cursor.html displays different cursors via CSS, and 'progress' (hand + circle) and 'wait' (circle) both flicker a lot even without anythign else happening. So it isn't that the machine has too much to do. Then it is the question if it is the screen or something like that, and if it can be made to work. Laptops are getting quite common... =) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 31295] Busy cursor flickers alot
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31295 Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: The animated cursor that is displayed when the system is busy flickers a lot, and by a lot I mean to the point where it is really distracting. It looks a bit like it is described in bug #29240, that frames disappear. I am however running a vanilla Ubuntu Dapper - completely updated, with Gnome only. The phenomenon appears from what I can tell everywhere, both when say opening a large directory (/usr/bin) in nautlius or starting new applications, but it is most clear - and annoying - when opening web pages in Firefox or Epiphany, perhaps because they use the combined arrow+circle instead of just the circle. Sometimes during the loading it stabilizes for a short while and looks ok, so it has the capability - so I kind of assume that it usually can't keep up somehow? I've tried some other mouse themes from gnome-look and it's the same thing. The hardware should not be an issue since it is very snappy apart from the fact that this is on a laptop, and the screen is one of those flat ones that run in 60Hz only. That could have somethiong to do with it. The cursor is smooth and nice on my Breeze desktop with much lower specs, so it's either Dapper or that it's a laptop. In either case, I think there needs to be some kind of solution, because I find myself more and more annoyed at this. If nothing else works, perhaps Ubuntu could provide a non-animated extra mouse theme by default? (Thinking about future generations also). -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
