Updating gdm to latest stable release (2.26.1) would fix lots of Ubuntu bugs, including bug #14571, bug #264553 and others. There are important improvements and new features in latest stable gdm version, for example ability to change keyboard layout (this is very important for lots of countries, where multiple keyboard layouts are used, for example Lithuania or Latvia). The language of the keyboard layout. E. g. if I am using dvorak layout and another user is using us layout, both have to input name and passwd in the layout of gdm (or they adjust it everytime). The new gdm sets the preferred layout, when clicking on the facebrowser-icon. You could say the update from GNOME Terminal 2.24 to 2.26 doesn't bring in anything useful to users (I didn't notice any change, except for having window size presets in the menu), but which version is shipped in Jaunty? 2.26. Also, GDM 2.26 isn't shipped in Universe, as you said it would be. Too late for Jaunty, though.
