Yes! Yesterday just before sending that comment right above, I installed 
libdvdcss2.
Today the Totem-xine is working properly.

My CPU is an AMD64, and the system is

The error has changed since moving to Dapper.  Now when I insert a dvd
the following error occurs:

No URI handler implemented for "dvd".

I have been using Xine to play dvd's with no problems.
