file-roller supports extracting RAR files through the unar package since Ubuntu 12.10. It also can use rar or unrar from the rar and unrar packages. - Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit - RAR file created with WinRAR 3.90 under Windows XP Error message Archive Type is not supported. I created different RAR files, always the same result, and was able to uncompress them with unrar 3.90 (downloaded at rarlabs.com). My problem was related to a series of broken RAR archives which cannot be opened with either the command line tools or the Windows tools.
