[Bug 35949] gdm hangs with any kernel newer than a 2.6.15-14-686

2006-03-26 Thread skwashd
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35949

Task: ubuntu xserver-xorg-driver-ati
Status: Needs Info = Fix Released

Comment:
I hope I changes this to the right status. Using the latest version of this
package everything is working fine, so I thought I would close it.

I should have reported it weeks ago ;)

Hi Fabio,

Yeah it does seem to be bug number 21 for the X600 :( I am now using
the vesa driver and it works, with a max res of 1600x1200 instead of the
usual 1920x1200

From reading through the other x600 bugs I could find, this is a dup of
#34661, feel free to mark it as such.

I also plan to try the DRI fix suggested in bug #35601 at some stage.
I reviewed my logs again and found that DRI fails with 2.6.15-14 and so
gdm runs fine. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Let me know if you need more info.

Cheers

Dave

Just to give a bit more info which might help someone looking into this

I have got my box again working with the ati driver @ 1920x1200 ! I had
to disable dri support, oh well.

I have access to a Fujitsu Lifebook E8020 which is also running dapper
using a X600 using the ati driver at 1400 x 1050 (iirc).  I will have a
play with it when I get a chance. It seemed to be running with dri
support on a 2.6.15-16-386 kernel.

Watch this space :)

Thanks for your bug report. Which video driver do you use and which
video hardware do you have? Can you start in recovery mode and try
startx? Does that work?

Daniel,

I tried 2.6.15-19 and 2.6.15-18 in recovery mode with startx and it is
the same as above except that it skips steps 3 4.

btw Sitsofe - caps lock goes AWOL too

Hope this help you track it down.

Cheers

[Bug 35949] gdm hangs with any kernel newer than a 2.6.15-14-686

2006-03-21 Thread skwashd
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35949

Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When trying to use any official dapper kernel newer than 2.6.15-14-686
gdm hangs. Here is the process:

1 machine happily boots
2 I watch the nice animations
3 screen goes black with the cursor flashing once or twice in the top left
corner of the screen
4 cursor stays solid for 1 or 2 seconds
5 screen goes completely black
6 hdd light flickers a little bit
7 machine sits there doing bugger all
8 try ctrl-alt-f[1-6] nothing
9 try ctrl-alt-bs nothing
10 scream about how fscking annoying this is
11 remember alt-sysreq-b and try it
12 machine reboots

When trying a 2.6.16-rc6 self compiled kernel the box has locked hard
and even steps 11 12 don't work, even with repeated use of step 10.
The power button is the only solution here.

This is what I expect to happen, and happens with 2.6.15-14-686:
1 machine happily boots
2 I watch the nice animations
3 screen goes black with the cursor flashing once or twice in the top left
corner of the screen
4 cursor stays solid for 1 or 2 seconds
5 screen goes completely black
6 hdd light flickers a little bit
7 the little circle animation comes up
8 the gdm graphical greeter loads
9 I enter my username and press enter
10 I enter my password and press enter
11 I admire the attractiveness of my wallpaper while gnome fires up

I have been trying to find out how I get gdm to output a stack of debug
info into a log file, but google, man or irc don't seem to have the
answer.

Here is some basic system info:
