I installed and booted with the current kernel (2.6.35-999-generic). I examined your ACPI dump and unfortunately your BIOS contains no methods for modifying brightness at all. :( Your only hope would be requesting a linux driver from the manufacturer. Thanks, Janis. The issue here is either that the laptop has a proprietary backlight control or the BIOS is slightly broken. Just in case, can you try running the current mainline kernel from the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds? This is just to ensure the problem's not specific to Ubuntu and not fixed already in the next release of the kernel. The keys may still not work, check /sys/class/backlight/ just to see if the kernel found anything. If the mainline kernel doesn't work, then our best hope is to get upstream linux to work around a bug in the BIOS. If this is the case, please install acpidump and attach a dump here with the following commands: sudo apt-get install acpidump sudo acpidump -o acpidump.txt I'll then try to take a look at the dump and determine if it's possible to workaround it. mad_man: Sorry for the confusion, I mean the /upstream/ report was not for a netbook. I know this one is. :) Just telling me that /sys/class/backlight/ is empty is enough information. That means the kernel has no control over your backlight! Can you tell me the output of cat /proc/cmdline? It seems like your netbook's brightness keys may be hardware-only, and the presses don't travel through the OS at all. I still need an ls of /sys/class/backlight from a non-working case. Assigning to kernel since it's a kernel ACPI issue. Unfortunately, the upstream bug report says that the Amilo 3520 doesn't support ACPI properly so the chances of fixing this are small. David, about amilo bug in acpi.. is it then possible that my version is good one ? Cause my friend also bought that Amilo and.. got the same problem as alszik... .. wiejkciuk even tried to downgrade his bios version to the same as mine without any luck... what we observed is that my lappie bahev unnormal if i remove battery i.e. after i just take it out and put it back... the system is saying cmos checksum error check the setting blabla... so i need to go to bios and set up the date, every time i remove battery from it... maybe it's something with: mad_man wrote on 2009-11-06: #17 ups.. sorry i forgot.. after i bought this lappie i decline the M$ license and i did a format... so there was no extra firmware loaded... ok, info for all the people that are monitoring this bug... for now i'm trying with @wiejkciuk figure out, what are the differences between our lappies and ubuntu configurations... cause on my ui3520, everything is working...well except FN+F6 ... (will try to fix that soon :D) so brightness from keyboard, camera, wifi on/off etc... so if anyone could try to install the ubuntu 9.04 (standard ver) and install this packges xserver-xorg-intel-video 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.4 and kernel 2.6.30-02063003-generic and also put this xorg.conf that is attached, and leave here reply if that help. I've installed a fresh 9.04 today, updated to kernel 2.6.30-02063003-generic and xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.4, even copied your xorg.conf to /etc/X11, but still no luck. :( The only difference, that I have a feedback of the brightness level (in the upper right corner), when I plug in/out the power cord. Fn keys or Brightness panel app still not working. I checked the bios settings, but can't find any relevant option. Well probably.. but it's not a uge problem, since the keys are visible by it... the bigger problem is that you can't set it up through xbacklight or even /sys/video... so.. there is something wrong with the intel gma drivers... so we need to w8 or... check other distros if they maybe figured this out.. i read few posts about fujitsu siemens lappies, and i found that there are some problems but... not so many.. Hi there, i also have this lappie, i checked the screen brightness and the problem is even bigger... the first thing is - yes - the cde events are inivible by xev, but after i do: dmesg | tail i can see them: [ 2690.098867] atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes 6a keycode' to make it known. Hello again, Doing some research [1, 2], I found that Amilo laptops do not actually pass events through X and ACPI. Unfortunately, upstream has already determined that this won't be fixed. For troubleshooting hotkeys, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting As a first step, do the following steps: 1) From a terminal, enter: xev | sed -n 's/^.*state \([0-9].*\), keycode *\([0-9]\+\) *\(.*\), .*$/keycode \2 = \3, state = \1/p' 2) press the brightness control key combination 3) post the output here (see if there is a keypress event) I'm doing some housecleaning and assigning to: gnome-power-manager xserver-xorg-input-evdev and removing Ubuntu Also, I think the convention on launchpad is to subscribe teams when escalation is required and to assign to: individuals when they are working on the fix.
