This thread is very old and has accumulated lots of different problems for different cameras. On top of that, Ubuntu has stopped using gnome- volume-manager altogether. Many cameras probably work in modern Ubuntu releases such as 8.04 LTS and 8.10. If they still don't work for you in those releases, please have a look at https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgphoto2/+bugs whether your particular model is already reported, and if not, please file a new bug there, with your particular model in the subject. DON'T say me too with this different camera, please use new bug reports for different models. If you file a bug report, please install the gphoto2 package, plug in your camera, say Unmount in the dialog which pops up, open a Terminal, and do gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile /tmp/gphoto.debug.txt -L to get debugging information. Please attach /tmp/gphoto.debug.txt to your bug report. Even though this is an old thread, I must say that I am too experiencing problems with a Canon PowerShot A530 under Hardy. on hardy I am using a Canon Powershot A400. The f-spot-import command is not being run when the Camera is plugged in. Camera gets mounted on Computer:// As Canon, Inc. Canon PowerShot A530 doesn't work in feisty.

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.
libhal.c 939 : Couldn't allocate D-BUS message

hal_get_property.c 178 : INFO: called LIBHAL_FREE_DBUS_ERROR but dbusError was
not set.
gnome-volume-manager-gthumb opens, the camera is on in read mode, it
recognizes the camera but only after quite a long time as a Canon
PowerShot A530 (PTP mode), and gives the error:
PTP I/O error
other times it says:
An error occurred in the io-library ('Unspecified error'): Could not
query kernel driver of device.

This issue with Digital camera not automounting, and importin pictures is happening under dapper as well, and not only to powershot based camera's.
