[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
Martin, thank you so much for your prompt response. I am really sorry, I was confused by the status of this bug. Since Launchpad is Ubuntu bug tracker, and based on my experience with other Ubuntu bugs I believed that Fix released status means that the bug has been fixed upstream, while Fix committed status means that upstream fix was applied to Ubuntu. Sorry once again for not getting this right. At least I tried to be helpful and to provide extra information (screen and printout inconsistency) not mentioned in other posts. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
No problem. I am shortly explaining the status meanings: This bug has 2 tasks GNOME Games and gnome games (Ubuntu). The (Ubuntu) one always reflects the status of the bug in an released version of Ubuntu (development versions included), while the other one reflects the status of the upstream bug. If the upstream bug is Fix Released, they have commit the change to the git version control system (This does not necessarily mean they have released a new version containing the fix), but after some time, they will do that. In this case the upstream bug has been fixed in git by commit http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome- games/commit/?id=277f2dc91426066296abfa1c3fdf1952fcc0fb68 on 2010-04-11 and they released the version 2.31.2 (31 is uneven, so it's a development version) of gnome-games on 2010-05-25 (see http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-games/log/ for more). We sometimes use the status Fix Committed for the Ubuntu task to reflect that the bug is fixed upstream (Triaged may be more appropriate, though; see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status for more). Once the gnome-games package in he development version has been updated to 2.31.2, we will mark the Ubuntu task as Fix Released. I hope that made the procedures more clear :) -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
I am still experiencing this bug with cell not being recognized as filled out after conflict resolution. Please see attached file. 1. Starting position: 1 and 7 are misplaced in the top row. 2. Step one: put 7 in place of 1 in the top row, creating a conflict, marked with red 3. Step two: put 1 in its correct position in the top row, clearing the conflict. You can now see that 7 in the top row becomes black again, but actually Sudoku thinks that the field is blank. And here is the demonstration to prove just that. 4. Fill out the remaining blank fields. The winning situation is not recognized! And here is the reason why. 5. Print out the game. Note the blank field in the top row where you can see 7 on the screen. It is missing from the printout! 6. Clear this 7 in the top row and put it back in. Now the winning situation is recognized, and everything is fine. I believe that conflict resolution needs further patching, and consistency with printout needs to be achieved.?field.comment=I am still experiencing this bug with cell not being recognized as filled out after conflict resolution. [Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
An interesting note Steve, whenever this happens I simply close and reopen the program and find that a square is already missing that I know I filled in. I've had the program do this on a consistent basis now so yes I was totally wrong before. I wonder if there is some kind of a memory bug going on so the program 'forgets' an entry or maybe it gets corrupted and can't tell that there is an answer in each box so it thinks you are still playing... The next time it konks out try double checking to make sure every entry is there and then close and reopen it and see if again every entry is in place. It's funny because I thought I was forgetting to fill them all in so it took a while to see that my memory (while still not reliable) wasn't at fault. Mike I've had your scenario as well and if you close and reopen the game, clear all squares, and then fill all squares it will do it. It's really strange - try closing and reopening then have the game finish the board for you and see if it acknowledges the win. My bets are on a memory problem. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
This happened to me as well, but also there were cells marked incorrect (red font) when they were actually correct (no other cell in row/column/square had the same number. I double-checked). After getting stuck on a first pass, I tried to have the program Fill all squares, but it did not do anything. I cleared the numbers and notes I had on the board and started over. As I was filling out the board, some numbers would highlight red, but not be paired with anything. After finishing the board, it did not acknowledge the win. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
It is not known the exact minimum number of given numbers to solve a sudoku with exactly one solution - this is open problem in Mathematics. My guess is that an algorithm finds a solution and the game grades according to it - this can be solved if the solution algorithm is modified to take into account the possibility of multiple solutions. I claim the bug is directly related to the multiple solutions problem. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
Sorry, but I can't agree with your conclusion, Chowno. As I said before, the problem occurs when there is only one solution and, more to the point, the exact same solution is acknowledged as correct after saving, closing, reopening, clearing one box, and re-entering the same number. But here's the really cool thing: after doing an update a few weeks ago (via Ubuntu Update Manager) the problem completely disappeared. Now the time-to-solution is not working (says I solve just about every puzzle in 56 seconds or so; I wish) but winning solution is always acknowledged. So somebody has fixed this. I can confirm the error. Hard puzzle, I choosed one of two open possibilities (it looked like two possibilities), but got stuck in a contradiction, stepped back, choosed the other idea, and didn't run in a contradiction. [Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
Just want to confirm, this bug has nothing to do with multiple solutions and is very reproducible. Every time I use a tracker to back out of a false solution and then get to the true solution, the solution is not acknowledged. Close Sudoku, reopen saved puzzle, clear one or more boxes (doesn't matter whether you clear them before closing or after reopening, but it is necessary to close and reopen Sudoku), reenter the same number(s), and the (identical) solution is acknowledged as a winner. Gotten so used to this it doesn't really bother me, but it would confuse someone encountering it for the first time. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
Has happened a lot (maybe half of the very difficult games) lately. Common element seems to be that they are all puzzles where I tracked potential solution, cleared tracker, then re-solved; sometimes several iterations, but always ending with a filled-in puzzle, no conflicts, no ta-da, and Sudoku saving the game as if it were not completed. Has happened on two machines now, both using Ubuntu 9.04. I've always wondered if Sudoku puzzles could have more than one solution. Most puzzles seem much more like a labyrinth than a maze in other words. Wish I had the mathematical chops to come up with a proof one way or the other. But in this most recent game I'm reasonably certain that I followed the only valid path arriving at the solution, eliminating all other possible entires along the way (in other words, every time I guessed I guessed wrong and had to go back and pick the sole remaining possible), so I find it hard to accept that I discovered an alternate solution this particular time. -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
Addendum: Got to reading the forums and decided to try something. I still had the game open. I cleared one box, closed Sudoku, opened Sudoku, filled in the one empty box (with the same number of course) and. . . TA-DA So much for the alternate solution theory. btw, I never use hints (yes, I'm bragging, but that's just cheating ;-) -- Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
