[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-29 Thread lesshaste
OK here is the update.

After the poweroff and restart the Toshiba logo comes up (it's a Toshiba
Tecra A9) and then it goes straight to booting linux without ever
showing the grub menu as described above.

However, it seems that grub IS actually running invisibly when the
Toshiba logo is showing but it just can't get hold of the screen. I
tested this by using the down arrow and pressing enter to boot into
windows instead of linux.

So, whatever part of the system attempts to display the grub menu to the
screen doesn't work after a poweroff (-P), but does work after a restart
(-r).

Any ideas how to tackle this? Looks like maybe the BIOS is not
initialising something properly, at a guess.

Boot logging using bootlogd does not work in jaunty so I have attached
/var/log/dmesg instead.

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-24 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks again.

Let's check the bot logs and see if any messages are coming up. To enable boot
logging, follow the instructions at the first post here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49925

Then attach one log after you shutdown with 'shutdown -h now' and one
log with 'shutdown -r now'

Comparing these two might give us a view as to what's stopping grub.

'shutdown -h now' shows the shutdown behaviour I describe above. That is
grub does not load when I start up the computer afterwards.

'shutdown -r now' loads grub .

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-23 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for the comments. I'm also assigning this to the grub package.
Please check the updated description and make sure it accurately
describes your bug.

If you shutdown through the terminal by typing:
shutdown now -r

does the grub menu load when you reboot?

Also, does grub load normally ever (do you dual boot normally)?

Thanks

- Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
+ After choosing shutdown, grub does not load upon reboot.

- On my toshiba tecra a9 laptop in jaunty/gnome with all updates applied,
- the shutdown option appears to actually suspend or hibernate. I am
- guessing this is what happens as grub doesn't load when you resume the
- computer.
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1) choose shutdown
+ 2) turn the computer on
+ 3) computer loads into Ubuntu

+ What should happen:
+ grub menu appears after reboot

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-22 Thread lesshaste
The power icon in the far top right on the gnome panel is the one I am
referring to. When I click on it I have the following options

Guest session, lock session, Log Out, Suspend, Hibernate, Restart,
Shutdown

This is the first install of linux on this laptop.

Best wishes,
Raphael

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-21 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for the report and helping to make Ubuntu better.

I am unable to reproduce your symptoms. When I click on the power icon,
the only options I have are suspend and hibernate.

Did this work in previous versions or is it a regression?
