That's fine if it is not designed to be run with sudo.  The problem is
that it does not run normally.  It only works when run as root now.
Here's a screen shot of when I opened it from the gui.

Is there any way to fix Nautilus so that it works without root
privileges?  Would completely removing it and reinstalling it help?

Nautilus is not designed to be ran with sudo. That's not a bug, so I'm
converting this in to a user question in the support tracker.
