In both Jaunty and Karmic the SystemAdministrationTime Date has no Synchronize Now button. I am confirming this on several installations from the final i386 live install CDs. It's a little button with a refresh icon, at the end of the line where you can set hours/minutes/seconds. Good for a start. Could you manually set the time to something obviously wrong, and then enable automatic NTP synchronization, so that you can check if it works or not. I have just installed a new machine with 9.10 and even though I had selected the correct time zone (europe-paris) the clock was two hours in advance. Using date and time from the administration menu (time-admin application - note that I use approximate translations here, my system is in french), I tried the settings synchronize with time server surprisingly with no success (was still two hours early). I have tried several servers. I checked the hardware clock in the bios: It was OK. Then I tried setting the time manually as time-admin seems to permit, but it kept flipping back to the wrong hour after 1 second! The synchronize now button did not correct the time either. This means that at least in some situations it is impossible to set the time either manually or automatically within time-admin! This really deceptive and not very user friendly... At first, in order to have the proper time displayed, I had found no other way than to switch to the azore time zone (which, of course is not ideal, as is has side effects for files and emails). I found the way to fix the problem after a few days: Click on the clock applet in the menu bar, open the places panel, click the modify button, and then in the clock preference windows which pops up, click the middle button set time. There you can actually set the correct time and apply it as system time (right button - with password validation). This procedure works, it's doable, but it's somewhat complicated and really hidden (the modify button is hidden in the places panel and one may think it only serves to modify... places!). Time-admin should be fixed so that one can also set the system time from it. Philippe: could you open a new report and copy/paste your description above into it? This bug is already complex to handle because of the many problems it raises, and your problem deserves a special treatment ASAP. About the original report, I should add: - does not update time, even if Keep synchronized with Internet servers is selected (and several NTP servers in list checked) Not sure, but sound an NTP bug to me. time-admin does not get time from the servers itself -how could it, since it's not running all the time. Please check that 'ps ax | grep ntp' reports that a process is running. - there is no Synchronize now button, even if the help mentions it This is an Ubuntu-specific patch that must have some rationale, I guess this is because this button does not give any info about the success or failure of the update. Either docs should be patched too, or the patch should be removed. Worth another report though, nobody will find this request hidden among other problems. And please also confirm that the Europe/Ljubljana time zone issue is still in Karmic, there have been a few fixes about that. At least, - keeps displaying the time zone as Europe/Sarajevo even if it is set to Europe/Ljubljana (/etc/timezone has : Europe/Ljubljana) should be fixed in Karmic now. Please report if it's the case. Other issues will need more investigation that I'll try to do later.
