This bug is not present in gvfs. I tested with ubuntu 9.04, and everything works OK. However, it no longer makes sense to make this bug belongs to gnome-vfs. It used to appear in totem, totem now use gvfs, so it doesn't appear anymore ... and nobody care about gnome-vfs. I've tried it, and Totem does indeed fail at loading a directory loaded over an SSH connection (using either ssh:// or sftp://), although it works with files over SSH, and files and directories over other VFSes such as SMB.
