I have the same issue with my feisty : When I insert a dvd, it is mounted correctly in /media/cdrom0 but it doesn't appear on my desktop nor in the left panel (tree or places) of nautilus. Curiously, with a CD in the same drive, all works fine. On Dapper, all works fine both with CD and DVD. I can confirm that this bug is still present in Feisty Fawn. Some observations: (1) When the DVD drive is empty and the lid is closed, a DVD icon is shown in "Computer". This is expected behaviour. But there's no way to open the lid from "Computer": Right clicking on "DVD drive" and selecting "eject" yields a dialog box that tells me "Unable to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive". Sure there isn't. But I didn't want to mount the drive, i wanted to open the lid. "eject /dev/hdc" works. So does hardware eject. (2) When I insert a movie DVD and close the lid, the DVD is automatically played with Totem. Again, this is expected bahaviour. However, the DVD icon in "Computer" disappears. Moreover, hardware eject does no longer work, presumably because there is a mounted DVD in the drive. So, no other way to reopen the lid but "eject /dev/hdc". (3) In case 2, when I double click on the CD-RW drive icon in "Computer" (my CD-RW drive is different from my DVD drive), the DVD drive icon reappears. However, both the "eject" and "mount" options in the DVD icons's context menu yield the same dialog box mentioned above: "Unable to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive". Heck, sure there's a media in the drive, Totem is currently playing it (however, exiting Totem before trying this doesn't change anything). But again, I didn't want to mount it, I wanted to eject it. Hardware eject still doesn't work, like in case 2. So, I'm still stuck with "eject /dev/hdc" to reopen the lid. (4) In each case, there is no DVD icon on the desktop. This is expected in case 1, and partly so in case 2, because there is no icon in "Computer" either (but there should be, both in "Computer" and on the desktop). But even in case 3, after double clicking on the CD-RW icon, when the DVD icon reappeared in "Computer", there is still no DVD icon on my Desktop. Unfortunately, yes. Thanks for asking. I have tried edgy on that machine and it's the same (well, actually worse): The icon disappears AND it doesn't play the DVDs. I have to admit it's a fairly old computer (1999 or 2000) that I'm going to replace with a newer one soon. I don't know if this helps: If, after having inserted a video DVD, I right-click eject the CDRW (the second drive) and close the lid again, the DVD drive icon reappears in Places>>Computer and I can right-click eject the DVD (but there's still no icon on the desktop). Martin, on my box /usr/share/gconf/schemas/apps_nautilus_preferences.schemas has that: "... /schemas/apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible nautilus bool true ..." ie: it's "true" by default.
