[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
A slightly different symptom. If I attempt to reproduce this with firefox *3.0* and Visual Effects are enabled, the Firefox window gains focus but remains underneath the other windows. If I attempt to reproduce this under 2.0 (as above) or with Visual Effects are disabled, the behavior is exactly as above. Perhaps this bug only affects people with particular hardware? I am using the integrated i945G graphics adapter on a CoreDuo. I doubt that the fix released really works. If it did I don't think I'd be still getting this under Hardy (development version). -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41623 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
This bug still exists and it is very annoying and confusing. The biggest problem is that people who don't know this think the application isn't started or link wasn't open. If I open a link in mail program. im or something like that and Firefox is not running it is started and gets a focus. But if Firefox is already running the link gets loaded in Firefox but the mail program still has the focus so you think nothing happens. The most annoying problem is that Firefox opens for some operation like downloads a new window. If you change back to main Firefox and click another download which appears in the opened popup you have to change manually to it. Afaik this doesn't happen in KDE so it is a Gnome issue. If someones want to check it. 1. Open Nautilus and make it full screen. 2. Open a video in Totem. 3. Change back to Nautilus. 4. Start another video with Totem. = Totem plays the new video but doesn't get focused. This happens for every application which is already running and allows only one instance (and doesn't have a workaround I guess). It is very likely that people click several times on a file until they realize. -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41623 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
sam, Thanks for your reply. What you described on your last post is what I understand as a normal case of focus stealing prevention from a well-behaved application. I find it logical and I can reproduce it on my system. So, following your steps (and ignoring step 4 as you said): 1.- Launch GNOME terminal 2.- Launch Epiphany. 3.- The Epiphany window appears on top of GNOME terminal as expected. 4.- Do nothing. 5.- Launch a new instance of Epiphany 6.- select gnome terminal, before epiphany is loaded 7.- epiphany does not steal the focus from gnome terminal. However, that is not what I reported. The point is that Firefox *always* seems to use focus stealing prevention. Using the same steps as before, except for 4 and 6: 1.- Launch GNOME terminal 2.- Launch Firefox. 3.- The Firefox window appears on top of GNOME terminal as expected. 4.- Select GNOME terminal. 5.- Launch a new instance of Firefox 6.- Do nothing. 7.- Firefox does not steal the focus from gnome terminal. = ??? I would expect that on 7 Firefox gets the focus. I see no point in it using focus stealing prevention, since nothing has been done during the time it has taken it to load. As a comparison, doing exactly the same procedure with Epiphany shows a different behaviour: 1.- Launch GNOME terminal 2.- Launch Epiphany. 3.- The Epiphany window appears on top of GNOME terminal as expected. 4.- Select GNOME terminal. 5.- Launch a new instance of Epiphany 6.- Do nothing. 7.- Epiphany steals the focus and appears on top of GNOME terminal. Note that step 7 is now what in my understanding is the normal behaviour of GNOME applications, which differs from Firefox in this case. Please feel free to correct me if I missed or misunderstood something about this focus stealing issue. Thanks. -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://launchpad.net/bugs/41623 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
it seems you are right. though it does not happen every time. i wonder if this is to do with the second instance of firefox spots that firefox is running already and tells the first one to open a new window. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://launchpad.net/bugs/41623 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
this is a feature called Focus stealing prevention, google find a good description at http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2004-December/msg00306.html Focus stealing prevention is active in Metacity. Roughly, it means that if a window was launched at time A, and the user interacted with a different window at time B, and BA, then the launched window will not be focused when it appears. This allows a user to work with an application while impatiently waiting for that really slow app (*cough* OpenOffice *cough*) to show up without being interrupted mid-thought when it finally does. It also prevents those annoying Instant Message windows from taking your keystrokes and sending them to someone when you meant to be typing them into the application window asking for your root password. i am going to mark this bug report as rejected, but feel free to reopen it and argur you case if you dont agree. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: firefox = metacity Status: Unconfirmed = Rejected ** Changed in: metacity firefox (Ubuntu) Binarypackagename: firefox = None -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://launchpad.net/bugs/41623 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41623] Re: Firefox windows do not get focus when launched
I understand the idea behind it. The only problem I see though, is that there is no consistency between applications. Epiphany and GNOME terminal, to name a couple, do not use focus stealing prevention AFAICT. They *always* get the focus. Taking Epiphany as an example and using the same steps I described on my first post: 1.- Launch GNOME terminal 2.- Launch Epiphany. 3.- The Epiphany window appears on top of GNOME terminal as expected. 4.- Select the GNOME terminal window. 5.- Launch a new instance of Epiphany 6.- The new Epiphany window gets the focus and appears on top of all other windows, thus not observing Metacity's focus stealing prevention rules. This behaviour is opposite to that of Firefox's. After a quick test, I've determined that focus stealing prevention happens in gedit and firefox, and *not* in epiphany, nautilus and GNOME terminal. Should I open a new applications in ubuntu do not use focus stealing prevention consistently bug? -- Firefox windows do not get focus when launched https://launchpad.net/bugs/41623 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
