I had similar, but not identical symptoms after a recent upgrade of Dapper 6.06LTS to Edgy 6.10. Nautilus would not show me any icon images as an ordinary user, only as root. I could not open them either. Nor could I see them in the icon browser (eg: via launcher properties). I also had similar MIME related problems with HTML, XML, and .tar.gz files as reported in bug 19101 - the fix I detailed there cured all these problems for me. This also happens with misnamed video-files and isn't something a normal user would understand or be able to fix. The mimetype definitions are done by shared-mime-info, reassigning.
