Without being able to reproduce it, it's hard to fault find. No I can't reproduce it at will. Sorry. I was tinkering with a bridge network interface around the time things went wrong with evolution. Maybe I did something while evolution was offline that couldn't be done, and even when it came online again, it couldn't clear the previous state? Ok. Panic is over. I managed to undo whatever I'd done. From the shell I did $ evolution --force-shutdown then $ evolution --component=mail --offline --debug=evolution_debug.txt --disable-eplugin and then went online, and the problem seemed to fix itself!
