[Bug 463200] Re: Nautilus no longer generates thumbnails for images

2009-11-19 Thread Mr.Mizzen
In an effort to track down the source of the problem,
Launching Nautilus from a terminal I get:
r...@imperial-command:~# nautilus

(nautilus:5720): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion
`preferences_is_initialized ()' failed

** (nautilus:5720): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal

'DownloadFinished'

** (nautilus:5720): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal
'ShareCreateError'
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension

I installed nautilus-dbg, then tried gdb to get a back trace.
I launch gdb with my usual setup:
gdb nautilus 2>&1 | tee gdb-nautilus1.txt
(gdb) handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
(gdb) set pagination 0
(gdb) run

However, it
a) reports
Reading symbols from /usr/bin/nautilus...Reading symbols from
/usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/nautilus...done.
(no debugging symbols found)...done.
b) exits and nautilus restarts without it.

Can someone give me a few hints on how to properly backtrace a nautilus process?

[Bug 463200] Re: Nautilus no longer generates thumbnails for images

2009-11-11 Thread Mr.Mizzen
(Nautilus Nautilus 2.28.1, AMD64)
Same or similar problem:
Some folders will randomly stop displaying thumbnails.
Selecting the folder on the left side tree view gives a blank display on the
right side and a spinning cursor.
Deleting files from /.thumbnails has no positive effect. At best when I view
the folder again, I get thumbnail place holders but no thumbnails.
I looked to see if it was a mime problem, but on my system there is no
.local/share/mime folder as suggested above.

The only oddity about these folders is when I use gThumb to view files, it
leaves a /.comments folder with an xml file I can not open.
So far the only semi cure I have for this is a reboot.
Then at least once I can view the files / thumbnails within the folders.
Anytime there after, I can expect a blank view to appear.

This directory is hung up at the moment:

This is probably what is making the unreadable .comments/.xml
I assume exif tags would have nothing to do with making thumbs though.

[Bug 463200] Re: Nautilus no longer generates thumbnails for images

2009-10-29 Thread Sebastien Bacher
not a nautilus bug in any case, you installed or ran an application
writting mimetype definition, you might try to figure which one though,
it's probably something not confiming from the ubuntu default
installation

[Bug 463200] Re: Nautilus no longer generates thumbnails for images

2009-10-29 Thread Oded Arbel
I have some files in .local/share/mime/application:

$ ls application/
x-extension-jpg.xml x-extension-png.xml x-msdownload.xml
x-wine-extension-hlp.xml x-wine-extension-ini.xml
x-extension-mrss.xml x-extension-pp2.xml x-wine-extension-cpl.xml
x-wine-extension-inf.xml x-wine-extension-its.xml

and they look like this:

http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/shared-mime-info";
type="application/x-extension-jpg">

  jpg document

After deleting them and also .local/share/mime/mime.cache, it started
generating thumbnails again.

I'm a bit concerned about this resolution because it seems that these
files were automatically generated by something called update-mime-
database, so its likely they will come back to bite me later. Well, at
least I'll know what to do.

the mimetype is wrong, do you have definitions in .local/share/mime
there?

[Bug 463200] Re: Nautilus no longer generates thumbnails for images

2009-10-29 Thread Oded Arbel
1. Its in my default session. I created a new session to test with, and there
it works fine.
2. I'm not sure regarding the definition of "non-standard" - I install stuff
using the Ubuntu Software Center all the time, and I also have a few external
packages installed as well (for example VirtualBox). None come to mind that may
cause this.

Thumbnails for other files, for example - PDF files, work fine.

Can you please recommend a few places to look regarding fixing the thumbnails
on my account?
- I tried deleting .thumbnails and as a result I now do not have any thumbnails
anywhere.
- I looked in Nautilus preferences and under "preview" I have everything set to
"local files only" and for "other previewable files" I also have "10mb" as the
maximum size
- I tried installing all packages of the form gnome-*-thumbnailer, but that did
not help

I think the problem may be in the mime settings - if I look at the
properties of a JPEG file and it said its type is "jpg document
(application/x-extension-jpg)" and similarly for png files.

I also tested creating GIF and XCF files and both show thumbnails
correctly and have their types list them as images (the XCF support
maybe the result of me installing gnome-xcf-thumbnailer). Also to create
the XCF and GIF files I opened a PNG file that was not thumbnailed using
GIMP, and that also caused a thumbnail to be generated for that file.

Thank you for your bug report, do you get the issue in a guest session?
Did you install anything non standard which could break it? There is no
other bug about this issue which means it's a local issue on your side
due either to the installation or configuration
