As BelleEsprit also confirms, there are no crash reports at all, that is the
crash reports which are generated automatically when some apps crash.
All I could find was two lines in the messages log file(var/log) which seemed
quite related to the problem on hand.Here they are:

Well, I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 and have a computer of i386, I also experience this problem and I can describe it in details: If you are not playing a track, you can move the volume control in rhythmbox's GUI up and down and it won't crash, but when you are playing a track, move the slider either up or down a little will cause rhythmbox to shut down, but itself don't regard it as a crash for I check my /var/crash dir and find nothing (I use Gnome desktop). Then I have to restart thythmbox again. Now when I'm playing a track and want to change the volume, I can only use hotkey -- ctrl + up and ctrl + down to control the volume or change the master volume of the system.
