I've got the same problem. Ubuntu loads very quickly to the login screen, then takes 26 seconds to show my wallpaper + icons + panel. I've attached my .xsession-errors when running gnome-session with the --debug option. Do you still get the issue on current lucid? Do you get the issue before having the gdm login screen or after entering your login informations? The last updates I did were two days ago. There has been no change to the speed of the desktop loading; it is still 20+ seconds from login to a usable desktop. The 'hang' occurs after my login password is accepted - up to that point, the boot is quick as is shutdown. I already have disabled my floppy drive in BIOS as that being enabled, in the absence of a physical device being part of the hardware, caused hassles for me on 9.10. OK, I will do that when I can. Unfortunately my desktop computer is stuck at my ex-girlfriends house - being an 'ex' (recent occurrence) I don't go there much and where I am now living has no Internet access (hence leaving my computer to use occasionally at the 'exes') and as the Huawei E620 3g modem I have does not work in 10.04, I am not sure how soon I can get the information to you. I will do my best, but as you can understand, it is not easy under present circumstances. I have agreed to fix her laptop, so I may be able to do it then, but I am unsure when she is available - I will send the information as soon possible. Desktop loads fine, but there is still that 20+ second lag between login and the desktop appearing - I have installed all the latest updates and although everything works once desktop loads, I am now getting various i/o errors at start up (prior to grub) and at shutdown as well. This has only occurred since the latest updates. Since the latest updates (20th March), there is still a 20+ second 'hang' before the wallpaper appears, however, now the panels do not load, but the desktop icons do. With no panels, Lucid is essentially unusable. Have to use ctrl-alt-delete to restart. I can confirm that Lucid B1 with last weeks updates take a fair while to go from sucessful login to wallpaper; Gnome-DO however appears immediately, but no panels, desktop icons or anything else does for 10-15 seconds. Oh well...what can I say, other than, I can promise with 100% certainty that the desktop does not load for 20 seconds. After the login box disappears, the 'light theme' is all that I see for 20 seconds - there is no wallpaper, nor panels nor a usable desktop until 20 seconds have passed. Why boot chart is not showing this, I have no idea. As I said yesterday, if I have already got a desktop going and then logout and back in, the desktop, appears very quickly (in fact before the music theme has stopped), but from a cold boot, it is extremely slow. I'll change the wallpaper and see if that makes a difference (although it is a native one). I'll let you know what transpires. Changing the wallpaper made no difference (was using the space one that has a number of wallpapers the change, that's why I thought that changing it might do something. I just timed the issue exactly. From the time I hit enter after inputting my password, the theme music takes 2 seconds before it starts playing and plays until 7 seconds. Before the desktop appears, another 20 seconds passes - total time from login to desktop is 27 seconds (worse than I thought). Hope there is some other log/s that can be looked at. From grub to login is quick, but after login it's very slow. I can promise, despite what bootchart indicates, it takes far longer than 8 seconds for me to see a desktop - 19 seconds longer. It is unfortunate that I can't show you what is happening. Guess I could video the monitor during startup to desktop if that would help. This is still occurring, however, if I just log off and then login again once the desktop is running, upon logging in again, the desktop loads very quickly. I therefore wonder whether the hanging issue is related to startup rather than gdm? I hope this is looked at as it is really annoying to have to wait 20seconds for the desktop to appear after login has been accepted. Affecting me as well. The time applet freezes at boot time and launched applets are not displayed, which only happens when something hangs at boot time. I removed 'quiet splash' from my /etc/default/grub file, at I can't determine what is hanging. I've removed the attached devices one by one, and all that changes is when it hangs. A 'normal' boot - when it happens - goes to the limited fsck quickly. Logging out seems to alleviate the problem as well on my system.
