ADDENDUM: my foregoing comment relates to Movie Player in Meerkat (ubuntu 10,10) / Netbook remiix on Asus EEE 1000 PC. The most recent updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] have been installed, but do not rectify the problem. When I try to play any AVI files from a DVD, they start the first few seconds then Movie Player stops with the current image on screen. The same happens if I copy the file to the hard drive on the netbook. The problem also occurs when I load a commercial movie disk The 4 popup error dialogs are consistent, and consistently in the same order as follows: (topmost error dialog first): 1) An error occurred Disconnected: Connection terminated 2) An error occurred pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated 3) An error occurred Disconnected: Connection terminated 4) An error occurred pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated The most recent updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] do not seem to fix it either. Try installing libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 from the Medibuntu repository, refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Playing%20Encrypted%20DVDs.
