Sorry for taking a long time to reply. I still have this issue. I am now using 10.04 UNR. Thanks for the report, that works fine for me, what i did was, create a SSH connection to a machine with nautilus then go to gedit open that location and file, enable the spell checking, it works fine even for new words added, may you tell us a few other easy steps on how to reproduce the issue?
