[Bug 57753] Re: Some partitions in edgy get two icons on the GNOME Desktop

2006-09-08 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I have something similar, but possibly not the same(?)

I have, showing on the desktop: hdb5, hdd1, Media, Media2 and Windows.
hdb5 and hdd1 are the same as Media2 and Media, respectively. The only
thing apparently different is that Windows isn't mounted via UUID (as
that didn't work when the change went in) while the two other partitions
are. There are no double entries in /etc/fstab.

Media, Media2 and Windows are the partition labels, of course.

Adding this info as it didn't seem exactly as the same behavior as the
other bug reports, since I have hd* names.

[Bug 57753] Re: Some partitions in edgy get two icons on the GNOME Desktop

2006-09-08 Thread nmwillard
** Description changed:

Vfat and NTFS partition get two icons on the GNOME Desktop. When these
partitions are removed from /etc/fstab, no icons appear.
+
+ Update* Partitions made with such programs as Partition Magic, that have
+ a enveloping partition in which the functional partition is enveloped in
+ shows up as two partitions, one as the volume name, and the other as the
+ physical name. This occurs on Ext2 partitions as well if it is enveloped
+ in a outer partition, and is not isolated to just ntfs.

[Bug 57753] Re: Some partitions in edgy get two icons on the GNOME Desktop

2006-09-08 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
With the updated description, maybe I should mention that my partitions
are not made with Partition Magic or any of the parted variants, but as
far as I can recall only managed from within Ubuntu and its installers.
Nor are the affected partitions NTFS or FAT, they are both ext3 systems.

I'm not so sure about the wrapped partitions either... cfdisk does not
show anything like that, especially for hdd1 which is the only partition
on hdd (unless I'm missing something).

And again, the one difference immediately obvious (if this affects NTFS
too) is that the double entries are mounted via UUID.

[Bug 57753] Re: Some partitions in edgy get two icons on the GNOME Desktop

2006-09-08 Thread givré
I also make some test, and it for me, it's totaly unrelated to the way
it was partition, but the problem seems to be the uuid stuff.

- When i mount a partition with uuid=*, it shows 2 drive in the desktop
- When i mount the same one with the old /dev/*, it shows one partition in the
desktop.

Also i made more test with my ntfs-3g partition.
Normaly, fuse partitions can't be shown in the desktop because of this bug
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/35354
Hal can't recognize them as an existant partition and so don't set them to
'mounted'.
But when i mount an ntfs-3g(fuse) partition with uuid=*, i have one icone on
the desktop, and none if i mount it with /dev/*.

So it seems that nautilus use an other way (on top of hal) to know if a
device is mounted or not, and this second method seems to use uuid.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57701 ***

This bug is a duplicate of 57701.

The culprit is the UUID=. in fstab, if you use /dev/hd it will show.
The bug is in gnome-vfs-code, hald /etc/fstab and /proc/mount don't use the
same value for the device.
