Try this in an empty directory: ~ touch A b C d Then try Nautilus in that directory with LC_COLLATE="C". You'll see this order: A b C d instead of the right one: "A C b d". It doesn't matter whether the first character in the name is a "." or not. Cedric, LC_COLLATE (as well as all LC_* settings) are environment variables when they are defined, and not settings in a configuration file.
