I tried it and nothing happened to me. Did you try backing up your .gaim folder and creating a new one to test it with? For the record, if the log files are corrupt, we still shouldn't crash. However, given the way the code works, nothing even looks at the contents of the log files to determine their size. It's obtained from a stat() call. I can't confirm this, though I am using SVN trunk on Dapper. Anyway, you should get a backtrace.
