@pfred1, Or if it is an issue where you have been clicking on the text and not the 'lock' icon next to the text, it is a dup of Bug #697450 . I had a similar problem, i am running Kubuntu 10.10 and by following the recommendation on this thread I run this command (/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1) under root user but i got this errors message "sudo: /etc/sudoers.d/README is owned by uid 1000, should be 0 >>> /etc/sudoers: /etc/sudoers.d/README near line 21 <<< sudo: parse error in /etc/sudoers near line 21 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting" any idea of what i am doing wrongly. Weird. polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 should definitely be running, and though starting it doesn't solve your problem. Running users-admin from the terminal is silent, even when I click on the "Click to make changes" button. As my user the "Click to make changes" button does nothing? I never tried this application before today. The only reason I tried it was because of something I read about PulseAudio and its group settings on some web page. I had another problem earlier that caused me to look for a way to get the sound control back onto my gnome-panel.
