[Bug 615380] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device

2010-08-23 Thread David Boss
Since floppies weren't automounting, I added a line for the device to
/etc/fstab:

/dev/sdc /mnt/floppy msdos noauto,user 0 0

... and made sure /mnt/floppy existed. When I then inserted a floppy and told
Ubuntu to
mount /dev/sdc, the command got no error, the drive made the appropriate
noises, but then
it didn't show up on /etc/mtab. A command was able to read from the drive,
though, referring to
it as /dev/sdc. But directory /mnt/floppy continued to appear empty.

Weird.

Re: [Bug 615380] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device

2010-08-10 Thread David Boss
I've got various USB devices connected through a Belkin 7-port USB hub. One of
these
is a Sony DVD reader/burner; when I insert a CD or DVD, it is properly
automounted.
When I plug an HP 2GB flash stick into the Belkin hub, it too is immediately
felt and
automounted. But when I insert a floppy into a Sony MPF82E USB floppy drive,
itself
already plugged into the Belkin hub, it makes the usual noises, which lets me
know
that it felt the insertion, but the floppy content doesn't appear in /media. I
expected that
it would; it doesn't. The same problem doesn't happen under Fedora 13.

All of which I already told you, with the possible exception of the model number
of the floppy drive. It's all the information I can give you. But if you still
insist on
ducking my report, so be that.

Thank you for your attention.

Dear David,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

For example, in this instance what device were you trying to hotplug?

Sincerely,

Darran
