I found this bug where OK/cancel icons were proposed: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/tangerine-icon- theme/+bug/40607 And these are the icons: http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/tango/okncancel.tar.gz Surely the proposed red cross's metaphor is not different from the current, ugly red cross? I don't think the proposed green tick's metaphor differs from the present, ugly green tick.
