The permission was incorrect. It should have been in the group "shadow" to make unix_chkpwd work. Group permissions were changed after installing isc-dhcp-server. Could your /etc/shadow file possibly have the wrong permissions? Happens here too, each time I activate the screensaver I cannot log back in normally. Started this morning. I'm running maverick btw. If this happens, you can choose 'switch user' and then login again using the normal GDM login screen. Tried your suggestion of leaving a message to verify that the keys were working correctly. They were. I had a similar problem which made me at first unable to enter the Ubuntu session. It was caused by my right shift key had not correctly been recognised as released. Maybe because of at the moment heavy loaded CPU, missed interrupt. Steps I used: 1) Leave message 2) Enter password (or all keys that is included) 3) Press all kinds of keys (i.e. shift, ctrl) until it is correctly shown. 4) Press Cancel to don't leave the message.
