The brightness applet used to display correct info, now it shows 40% after logon and then when I change it it shows the above message on the tooltip. Also, after logon, the display is very bright, I believe it's 100%. On Hardy it used to be the last setting from the previous session. The applet can still change the brightness, it just doesn't display it correctly. The laptop model is Acer Aspire 5101 ANWLMi, so it's not a Dell. Brightness applet still works to adjust brightness (as it did in 8.04) but now (after installing 8.10) does not show the brightness percentage when hovered over - instead displaying "cannot get laptop panel brightness". (Straight after login, the applet shows the correct brightness of 100% but as soon as the slider is adjusted the problem presents itself.) This does not seem to be a duplicate of #43572. I am not quite sure if the issue I am experiencing is the same as the one described in bug #43572. Changing the slider in the applet actually does set the screen brightness correctly, but the applet fails to show the percentage (displaying "Cannot get laptop panel brightness") for any level below 100%.
