This upload fixes the bug:

 gnome-panel (2.17.92-0ubuntu4) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/patches/17_change_socket_directory.patch:
 - use the correct location and updated logic to use the new path,
   fix upstream session mode (Ubuntu: #85340)

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? How do you
try to close the session? There is 2 menu items with the upstream mode,
if you use the panel launcher you only have half of the options
available
