Hi, Some insights on this. I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Packard Bell EasyNote LJ65. This laptop as a GMA4500 M chip. After some research, I saw that from kernel with version above 2.6.38_rc8 (in other words, version of Ubuntu higher than 10.10), a regression did happen causing no backlight on the screen. It's not possible to use the Live CD to try or install since the screen remains black. I found kind of a workaround for this problem. 1. gedit /etc/default/grub 2. change: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off" 3. sudo update-grub 4. reboot 5. now the brighness controls works but there is no indicator on the upper right corner (I can live with that) I dont know what the option 'acpi=off' exaclty does... so I dont know if it is a valid solution for the problem.
