And it should be possible to turn off the subpixel rendering alltogether. I have heard of gnome-tweak-tool, but I have also heard a lot of warnings about it, which say that it shouldn't be used for Ubuntu. sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool After that you will be able to change fonts and aliasing.
