So?

That performs a huge variety of tasks, one of the major ones of which is
loading the drivers required by the system.  Your problem is far more
likely caused by a kernel driver, for example the one for your video
card.

But that file belongs to the udev package, and after it has run the icon
is corrupted.

OK, further investigation:

I booted with init=/bin/bash and ran rcS scripts until the problem
showed up.

S10udev was where the problem began.
