Thank you for the tip. I had not deleted first. I did not realise that Expunge worked only on the Deleted folder. With Junk folder 'open' - displayed on screen - the folder does not clear its contents when 'expunge' is called by a single mouse click in the drop-down menu. It does not clear either when the indicated keystroke is used.
